Microscale fluid and particle dynamics in filtration processes in water treatment: A review

Shuang Song et al.

Summary: Granular filtration and membrane filtration in water treatment often face filter fouling, and understanding microscale fluid and particle dynamics is crucial for improving filtration efficiency and stability. This review identifies and reviews key topics in filtration processes, including fluid velocity profile and particle accumulation. It also discusses experimental and computational techniques for investigating filtration processes and outlines future research directions. The review provides a comprehensive overview of microscale fluid and particle dynamics in filtration processes for the water treatment and particle technology communities.

Experimental study on the anti-clogging ability of siphon drainage and engineering application

Xin Yan et al.

Summary: The clogging issue of drainage holes in slope retaining walls along expressways threatens the safety and stability of the walls. This research conducted model tests and theoretical analysis to demonstrate the clogging problem and the anti-clogging ability of siphon drainage. The application of siphon drainage successfully reduced the groundwater level and showed no signs of clogging during the four-month operation, proving its effectiveness in treating leakage hazards.

Phase-field Lattice Boltzmann model for liquid bridges and coalescence in wet granular media

N. Younes et al.

Summary: In this paper, a phase-field based Lattice Boltzmann model is proposed to simulate the formation and coalescence of capillary bridges between spherical solid particles as well as the associated capillary forces. Two benchmark examples are considered to validate the proposed model, and the numerical results are in good agreement with experimental and numerical data. The proposed model provides a viable framework for capturing the complex capillary interface evolution during the wetting of a large assembly of particles.

CFD-DEM modelling of the migration of fines in suspension flow through a solid packed bed

Zhouzun Xie et al.

Summary: In this work, a smoothed volume distribution model (SVDM) was developed to simulate the migration of fines in suspension flow through a solid packed bed based on the unresolved CFD-DEM framework. The SVDM method allows a high-resolution mesh and can achieve a high efficiency and applicability compared to the DPVM method. The effects of inlet fine concentration and solid/fine size ratio on fines migration behavior were also studied, revealing insights into fine powder holdup and migration mechanisms.
