Influence of non-urban reference delineation on trend estimate of surface urban heat island intensity: A comparison of seven methods

Huimin Liu et al.

Summary: This study tested the sensitivity of surface urban heat island intensity (SUHII) trend estimates to different methods of non-urban reference delineation across 281 Chinese cities. The results showed that the selection of non-urban references significantly affected the SUHII results and the nature of observed thermal islands in the cities. The use of stable non-urban references is necessary for reliable trend estimation of urban-induced SUHII variations.

Uncertainty of city-based urban heat island intensity across 1112 global cities: Background reference and cloud coverage

Kangning Li et al.

Summary: This paper quantitatively evaluated the spatiotemporal variations of urban heat island and the uncertainty of its estimation. The results showed that the modified equal area-rural (MEA-R) method and the first spatial and after temporal aggregation with threshold removal (FSAT-T) method provided better estimates. However, the different methods used to define the background reference and deal with missing data introduce uncertainty and affect the results.

Impact of urbanization on land surface temperature and surface urban heat Island using optical remote sensing data: A case study of Jeju Island, Republic of Korea

Muhammad Farhan Ul Moazzam et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the land use and cover changes as well as the land surface temperature in Jeju Island using remote sensing data. The findings revealed that urbanization has led to the intensification of urban heat island effect. By measuring the temperature of different land types and correlating it with wind speed, an inverse relationship between surface urban heat island and wind speed was identified. The results of this research can be utilized by policymakers, planners, and climatologists for developing climate-resilient cities.
