Genetic analysis reveals the putative native range and widespread double-clonal reproduction in the invasive longhorn crazy ant

Shu-Ping Tseng et al.

Summary: Clonal reproduction allows invasive species to avoid inbreeding depression, giving them an advantage in establishing themselves. The prevalence and significance of the double-clonal reproduction system in the invasive ant, Paratrechina longicornis, remains unclear. Our study found that double clonality is widespread in P. longicornis populations worldwide, suggesting its importance in facilitating global colonization.

The Alarm Pheromone and Alarm Response of the Clonal Raider Ant

Lindsey E. Lopes et al.

Summary: Ants communicate through a variety of pheromones, including alarm pheromones. In this study, the alarm pheromone and response of the clonal raider ant Ooceraea biroi were characterized. The alarm pheromone was identified as a blend of 4-methyl-3-heptanone and 4-methyl-3-heptanol, released from the ant's head. These compounds induced both repulsive and attractive behavior in ants, depending on their concentration. This is the first report of an alarm pheromone in O. biroi and provides insights into chemical communication mechanisms.

Economic costs of invasive alien ants worldwide

Elena Angulo et al.

Summary: The study found that invasive ants have massive economic costs, with damage costs accounting for the majority, mainly impacting agriculture, public utilities, and social welfare. The reported costs are mainly concentrated in developed economies such as the USA and Australia, while cost information is lacking for most invaded countries. Therefore, collaboration between managers, practitioners, and researchers is needed to enhance cost reporting of invasive ants, providing important information for decision-making.
