A Randomized, Double-Blind, Midazolam-Controlled Trial of Low-Dose Ketamine Infusion in Patients With Treatment-Resistant Depression and Prominent Suicidal Ideation

Tung-Ping Su et al.

Summary: This study suggests that low-dose ketamine infusion is a safe and effective treatment for patients with TRD and prominent suicidal ideation. The timing of ketamine administration, specifically the duration of the current depressive episode and the number of failed antidepressant trials, plays an important role in achieving therapeutic response.

Ketamine for the acute treatment of severe suicidal ideation: double blind, randomised placebo controlled trial

Mocrane Abbar et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to confirm the rapid onset anti-suicidal benefits of ketamine in the short term and at six weeks, overall and according to diagnostic group. A double blind, randomized, placebo controlled trial was conducted on 156 participants. The results showed a higher rate of complete suicidal remission in the ketamine group on day 3.

Suicide and self-harm

Duleeka Knipe et al.

Summary: Suicide and self-harm are major health and societal issues worldwide, with a higher burden observed in low-income and middle-income countries. The causes of these behaviors are multifactorial, influenced by factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, and geography. Clinical and public health interventions offer promise, but their effectiveness has mostly been studied in high-income countries. Predicting suicide is unlikely to be helpful, and intervention and prevention efforts should involve both clinical and community approaches, involving every healthcare professional.

Prevalence and Correlates of Suicide and Nonsuicidal Self-injury in Children A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Richard T. Liu et al.

Summary: Considerably less is known about self-injurious thoughts and behaviors (SITBs) in preadolescence than older age groups, but the prevalence of preadolescent suicide has increased in recent years. This study aims to assess the prevalence and correlates of preadolescent SITBs, as well as compare them with adolescent SITBs in terms of associated characteristics.

Ketamine as a prophylactic resilience-enhancing agent

Audrey G. Evers et al.

Summary: Stress exposure is a major risk factor for psychiatric illnesses. This review explores the potential pro-resilience effect of ketamine in rodents and its preliminary evidence as a prophylactic treatment for postpartum depression in humans. Animal studies have shown that ketamine given prior to a stressor can protect against depressive-like behavior. Similar protective effects have been observed against PTSD-like behavior. Recent research also found that ketamine administration immediately after caesarian-section significantly reduced the prevalence of postpartum depression.

International pooled patient-level meta-analysis of ketamine infusion for depression: In search of clinical moderators

Rebecca B. Price et al.

Summary: Ketamine has rapid antidepressant effects and can reduce depressive symptoms in a variety of patients. It is particularly effective in patients who have been resistant to previous medications. However, there are currently no specific clinical or demographic characteristics that can guide treatment decisions for ketamine.

Predictors of change in suicidal ideation across treatment phases of major depressive disorder: analysis of the STAR*D data

Cory R. Weissman et al.

Summary: The study analyzed STAR*D trial data and found that factors such as history of suicide attempts, comorbid medical illness, and family history of drug abuse can impact changes in suicidal ideation. Treatment with bupropion and buspirone was associated with reduction in suicidal ideation. Improvement in suicidal ideation was correlated with improvement in overall depression symptoms.
