Sunitinib and Pterostilbene Combination Treatment Exerts Antitumor Effects in Gastric Cancer via Suppression of PDZD8

Yudai Hojo et al.

Summary: The use of molecular-targeted drugs in gastric cancer treatment is increasing, but the variety of these drugs is still limited. In this study, the combination of sunitinib and pterostilbene showed significant suppression of cell proliferation and increased oxidative stress. The combination therapy also had a pronounced antitumor effect in a mouse tumor model. These findings suggest that the combined use of sunitinib and pterostilbene may be a new molecular-targeted therapy for gastric cancer.

Summary: This study investigated the role of NLRP3 inflammasome in synovitis of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) and explored the therapeutic potential of caspase-1 and NLRP3 inhibitors. The findings suggest that NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated pyroptosis contributes to synovial inflammation in TMJOA, and interfering with this process could be a potential option for controlling TMJOA development.

Oxidative stability and gelation properties of myofibrillar protein from chicken breast after post-mortem frozen storage as influenced by phenolic compound-pterostilbene

Yingjie Wang et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary pterostilbene supplementation on physicochemical changes and gel properties of myofibrillar protein (MP) in chicken during short-term frozen storage. The results demonstrated that pterostilbene supplementation reduced the oxidation of MP, slowed the loss of sulfhydryl and free amino groups, and decreased the surface hydrophobicity and insolubility of MP. Furthermore, dietary pterostilbene inhibited the unfolding of protein structure and the transition of alpha-helix to beta-sheet structure. These effects contributed to the improved gel quality, including enhanced strength, whiteness, and water-holding capacity, as well as the formation of a dense and homogeneous gel network structure. Overall, these findings suggest that pterostilbene can be used as a dietary supplement to maintain the structural stability of MP in chicken breast muscle during postmortem storage and enhance gel functional properties.

Dietary stilbenes as modulators of specific miRNAs in prostate cancer

Anait S. Levenson

Summary: Accumulated experimental data suggest that natural plant products may have chemopreventive and therapeutic effects by modulating miRNA expression. Dietary polyphenols, including flavonoids, stilbenes, and lignans, have been extensively studied for their miRNA-mediated cardioprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. This review focuses on the role of stilbene-regulated miRNAs in cancer, particularly their interaction with MTA1 signaling in prostate cancer.

Improved oral nutraceutical-based intervention for the management of obesity: pterostilbene-loaded chitosan nanoparticles

Lamia A. Heikal et al.

Summary: This study aimed to formulate and evaluate the oral anti-obesity effect of pterostilbene-loaded nanoparticles. The nanoparticles were successfully prepared and showed improved bioavailability and an enhanced anti-obesity effect compared to free pterostilbene. The nanoparticles decreased cholesterol levels and facilitated the conversion of white fat to brown fat, resulting in sustainable weight loss and minimal side effects. These findings suggest that orally administered pterostilbene nanoparticles could be a promising anti-obesity strategy with significant socio-economic impact.

Pterostilbene Changes Epigenetic Marks at Enhancer Regions of Oncogenes in Breast Cancer Cells

Sadaf Harandi-Zadeh et al.

Summary: Epigenetic aberrations are associated with sporadic breast cancer, and dietary polyphenols such as pterostilbene have been shown to regulate gene expression by altering epigenetic patterns. The study reveals an impact of pterostilbene on enhancer regions in breast cancer cells, affecting DNMT3B binding, H3K36me3 levels, enhancer hypermethylation, and gene expression downregulation. Additionally, the research highlights the involvement of oncogenic transcription factor OCT1 in mediating the effects of pterostilbene on enhancers and gene expression in breast cancer cells.

Summary: In this study, pterostilbene was found to partially prevent high-fat high-fructose feeding induced liver steatosis in rats, showing a dose-response pattern. It mainly acts by reducing de novo lipogenesis and increasing triglyceride assembly and release, with an improvement in mitochondrial functionality observed. At the same dose, the effects induced by pterostilbene and resveratrol, as well as the mechanisms involved, were similar.
