Schizophrenia-associated Mitotic Arrest Deficient-1 (MAD1) regulates the polarity of migrating neurons in the developing neocortex

Bon Seong Goo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the association between MAD1L1 and schizophrenia and identifies the molecular mechanisms underlying this association. The researchers found that MAD1 plays a crucial role in neuronal development and is involved in neuronal migration and neurite outgrowth. MAD1 also regulates vesicular trafficking from the Golgi apparatus to the plasma membrane, which is essential for neuronal polarity. The findings suggest that alterations in MAD1 may contribute to the pathobiology of schizophrenia.

Serine and arginine rich splicing factor 1: a potential target for neuroprotection and other diseases

Ana M. Sandoval-Castellanos et al.

Summary: Alternative splicing is the process of generating diverse mRNAs by selecting different combinations of splice sites within a precursor mRNA. This splicing allows a single gene to produce multiple protein isoforms with distinct properties and functions. Serine-arginine rich splicing factor 1, a member of the serine-arginine rich protein family, serves as a regulator of mRNA splicing and can either activate or inhibit splicing depending on its phosphorylation status and interacting partners. Extensive research has been conducted on serine-arginine rich splicing factor 1 due to its potential roles in various diseases, such as neuroprotection, cancer, and autoimmune disorders. This review highlights the study of serine-arginine rich splicing factor 1 in neuroprotection as well as its involvement in cancer and immunological disorders beyond the nervous system.

Progress In Stem Cells Based Replacement Therapy for Retinal Pigment Epithelium: In Vitro Differentiation to In Vivo Delivery

Santosh Gupta et al.

Summary: Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a critical cell monolayer forming the blood-retina-barrier (BRB) and a permeable bridge between the choriocapillaris and the retina. Loss of the RPE is associated with degenerative diseases like age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Pluripotent stem cell-derived RPE (pRPE) has been extensively explored as a regenerative module for treating AMD, and strategies for RPE derivation and transplantation have been discussed in this review.

Raquel Garcia-Perez et al.

Summary: Understanding the consequences of individual transcriptome variation is crucial for studying human biology and disease. The study found that ancestry, sex, age, and BMI contribute to gene expression variability, while splicing variation is mainly influenced by ancestry. The study also identified a systemic contribution of type 1 and type 2 diabetes to tissue transcriptome variation.

AMD Genomics: Non-Coding RNAs as Biomarkers and Therapeutic Targets

Charles Zhang et al.

Summary: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of blindness in the aging population. Specific prognostic tools and effective therapies for intermediate and advanced stages of AMD are needed. Recent clinical trials have shown promising results with anti-C5 and anti-C3 agents in slowing the growth of advanced AMD, but they may increase the incidence of wet AMD. Further research on the role of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) in AMD is crucial for developing biomarkers and therapeutic targets.

The Childhood-Onset Neurodegeneration with Cerebellar Atrophy (CONDCA) Disease Caused by AGTPBP1 Gene Mutations: The Purkinje Cell Degeneration Mouse as an Animal Model for the Study of this Human Disease

Fernando C. Baltanas et al.

Summary: Rare biallelic damaging variants of the AGTPBP1 gene have been linked to a novel human disease called childhood-onset neurodegeneration with cerebellar atrophy (CONDCA). Patients with CONDCA exhibit cognitive decline, ataxia, and muscle weakness, similar to the neurodegenerative course observed in pcd mice harboring loss-of-function mutations in the AGTPBP1 gene. Therapeutic strategies using pcd mice as a model have shown promise for developing treatments for patients with AGTPBP1 mutation-related CONDCA.
