Escape, discard, and landing probability in multispecies Mediterranean bottom-trawl fishery

Chryssi Mytilineou et al.

Summary: This study provides important information for the sustainable development and management of Mediterranean fisheries by investigating the selection patterns of commercial bycatch species in the trawl fishery. It highlights the suitability of different codends for different species, while considering factors such as juvenile protection, discard mitigation, and fisher behavior.

Status and Management of Mixed Fisheries: A Global Synthesis

Ming Sun et al.

Summary: Mixed fisheries refer to the situation where multiple species are caught together and harvested by different fleets. They present unique challenges for assessment and management due to their biological and technical interactions, distinguishing them from single-species fisheries. This knowledge synthesis reviewed global mixed fisheries to characterize their attributes, provide overviews on assessment and management, assess research progress, and identify key factors affecting management effectiveness. The study found diverse characteristics of mixed fisheries worldwide, making universal management solutions unlikely. However, incorporating ecosystem-wide management considerations proved to be the most significant contributor to improved management performance.

Fixed mesh shape reduces variability in codend size selection

Zita Bak-Jensen et al.

Summary: This study found that the commonly used diamond-mesh codends in demersal trawls tend to have varying mesh geometry during fishing, resulting in an unclear size selection process. By comparing experimental tests, it was discovered that rigid codends with constant mesh geometry have better stability in size selection for Atlantic cod. These findings can guide the design of more suitable codends in future research.

Test and development of a sediment suppressing system for catch monitoring in demersal trawls

Maria Sokolova et al.

Summary: Monitoring catch during demersal trawling is crucial for managing high bycatches. This study presents a modified trawl system comprising a sediment suppressing sheet and an in-trawl image acquisition system, which significantly reduces sediment disturbance and allows clear imaging of catch during trawling on soft muddy grounds.

Exploring new netting material for fishing: the low light level of a luminous netting negatively influences species separation in trawls

Junita Diana Karlsen et al.

Summary: The study found that the luminous netting VISIONET can alter the vertical behavior of fishes and Nephrops in a Nephrops trawl fishery. Contrary to expectations, gadoids tended to enter the lower compartment more frequently, while large Nephrops preferred the lower compartment.
