A new method for stochastic analysis of structures under limited observations

Hongzhe Dai et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new method for modeling and response propagation of non-Gaussian systems under limited observations. The method utilizes Karhunen-Loeve expansion and kernel density estimation to construct a random model, and implements arbitrary polynomial chaos formulation for response propagation. The proposed method provides an effective framework for uncertain analysis of real-life engineering systems with limited observations.

A stochastic finite element scheme for solving partial differential equations defined on random domains

Zhibao Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel stochastic finite element scheme to solve partial differential equations defined on random domains. A geometric mapping algorithm is used to transform the random domain into a reference domain, and a random isoparametric mapping is proposed to generate the stochastic finite element equation. The obtained equation is then solved using a weak-intrusive method, which achieves efficient solution of high-dimensional stochastic problems.

Simulation of random fields on random domains

Zhibao Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the simulation of random fields on random domains, which is an important problem in topology optimization and multiphase material analysis. The authors propose the stochastic Karhunen-Loeve expansion (SKLE) as an extension of the classical Karhunen-Loeve expansion (KLE) to solve this issue. They present three numerical algorithms, including an extended Monte Carlo simulation (MCS), a domain transformation-based method, and a reduced-order method, to efficiently solve the stochastic integral equations in the SKLE. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

A novel method for solving nonlinear stochastic mechanics problems using FETI-DP

Gopika Ajith et al.

Summary: In this work, a scalable method based on domain decomposition is proposed for solving large-scale nonlinear stochastic mechanics problems. The mechanics problem and random fields are discretized using finite element bases and Karhunen-Loeve expansion, respectively. A surrogate model based on stochastic collocation is built for each subdomain to solve deterministic nonlinear problems. Numerical tests show that the proposed method is computationally efficient and accurate for plasticity problems, with good scalability in parallel implementation.

Uncertainty analysis in solid mechanics with uniform and triangular distributions using stochastic perturbation-based Finite Element Method

Marcin Kaminski

Summary: This paper presents the theoretical formulation and computational implementation of the Stochastic perturbation-based Finite Element Method (SFEM) for uncertainty analysis in solid mechanics with symmetric non-Gaussian input parameters. The method is based on general order Taylor expansions of all uncertain input parameters and state functions, with a focus on even orders only. The implementation of SFEM for the displacement version of FEM has been completed using statistically optimized nodal polynomial response bases, and the results have been validated using probabilistic semi-analytical approach and Monte-Carlo simulation.

An efficient reduced-order method for stochastic eigenvalue analysis

Zhibao Zheng et al.

Summary: This article presents an efficient numerical algorithm for computing eigenvalues of stochastic problems. The method represents stochastic eigenvectors as a sum of the products of unknown random variables and deterministic vectors. The algorithm decouples stochastic eigenproblems into deterministic and stochastic analyses. It efficiently computes deterministic vectors through a few deterministic eigenvalue problems. The corresponding random variables and stochastic eigenvalues are solved using a reduced-order stochastic eigenvalue problem constructed by the deterministic vectors. The proposed method avoids the curse of dimensionality and can solve high-dimensional stochastic problems with low computational effort. Numerical examples demonstrate its accuracy and efficiency compared to existing methods.

A weak-intrusive stochastic finite element method for stochastic structural dynamics analysis

Zhibao Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper presents a weak-intrusive stochastic finite element method for solving stochastic structural dynamics equations. The stochastic solution is decomposed into a series of products of random variables, spatial vectors, and temporal functions. An iterative algorithm is proposed to compute each triplet of the random variable, spatial vector, and temporal function. The original problem is transformed into spatial-temporal coupled problems and then into stochastic-temporal coupled problems. The proposed sampling method efficiently solves the stochastic-temporal problems in high-dimensional stochastic spaces.

A sample-based iterative scheme for simulating non-stationary non-Gaussian stochastic processes

Zhibao Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new numerical scheme for simulating stochastic processes based on their specified marginal distribution functions and covariance functions. By generating stochastic samples to meet target marginal distribution functions and using an iterative algorithm to match the simulated covariance function to the target, the proposed method can accurately represent stochastic samples in series forms. The approach is applicable to non-stationary non-Gaussian stochastic processes and is demonstrated through three examples to be accurate and efficient.
