Effects of bamboo-charcoal modified by bimetallic Fe/Pd nanoparticles on n-hexane biodegradation by bacteria Pseudomonas mendocina NX-1

Sini Lv et al.

Summary: The influence of bamboo-charcoal modified by bimetallic Fe/Pd (BBC) on n-hexane biodegradation by Pseudomonas mendocina NX-1 (PM) was investigated. The presence of BBC increased the removal efficiency of n-hexane. The highest removal efficiency of 90.0% was achieved at pH 7.7 and 35 degrees C with 0.05 g L-1 BCE and 3 g L-1 NH4+.

Abatement of binary gaseous chlorinated VOC by biotrickling filter: Performance, interactions, and microbial community

Qian Li et al.

Summary: The treatment of waste-gas containing CVOCs has become a challenging issue in air pollution control. This study established a bioaugmented BTF and investigated the biodegradation of gaseous DCM and 1,2-DCE. The bioaugmented BTF exhibited faster startup, higher removal efficiencies, and superior mineralization compared to the BTF inoculated with activated sludge alone.

Enhanced Removal of Hydrophobic Short-Chain n-Alkanes from Gas Streams in Biotrickling Filters in Presence of Surfactant

Xin Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal performance of n-alkanes and microbial response mechanisms in a biotrickling filter (BTF) in the presence of surfactant. The results showed that the addition of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) significantly enhanced the removal efficiency of n-alkanes and promoted the activity and succession of the microbial community.

Chiral Magneto-Optical Properties of Supra-Assembled Fe3O4 Nanoparticles

Qysar Maqbool et al.

Summary: Research on the chiral magneto-optical properties of inorganic nanomaterials has shown enhanced activity in the visible range when using supra-assembled Fe3O4 magnetite nanoparticles at weak magnetic fields of 1.5 mT. The differences in magnetic circular dichroism responses are attributed to crystallinity, lattice distortion near grain boundaries, and dipolar interactions in the supra-assembled structures.

Enhanced biodegradation of n-hexane in a two-phase partitioning bioreactor inoculated with Pseudomonas mendocina NX-1 under chitosan stimulation

Dong-Zhi Chen et al.

Summary: This study introduced chitosan into a TPPB to increase cell surface hydrophobicity and improve n-hexane mass transfer, achieving higher removal efficiency and elimination capacity for n-hexane biodegradation compared to TPPBs without chitosan. Chitosan not only enhanced hydrophobic cells' ability to capture n-hexane in aqueous phases, but also improved mass transfer from gas phase to biomass, providing a new strategy for hydrophobic VOCs treatment in TPPBs.

Compounds interactions during simultaneous biodegradation of hydrophobic n-hexane and hydrophilic methanol vapors in one- and two-liquid phase conditions

Sina Keramati et al.

Summary: The simultaneous biodegradation of n-hexane and methanol was studied in batch culture with the addition of silicone oil. The presence of oil improved the removal efficiency of n-hexane but decreased the removal efficiency of methanol. Statistical analysis and kinetic study provided insights into the optimal treatment conditions and reaction mechanisms for the biodegradation process.

Degradation of tetracycline antibiotics by Fe2+-catalyzed percarbonate oxidation

Jose Antonio I. Pimentel et al.

Summary: This study investigates the degradation of tetracycline antibiotics in aqueous solutions by ferrous ion-catalyzed oxidation in the presence of sodium percarbonate. Experimental results showed that the presence of chloride ions accelerated the degradation kinetics of TC and achieved complete tetracycline abatement in 10 minutes. This suggests the effectiveness of percarbonate oxidation as a tertiary treatment technology for wastewaters containing antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals.

Effect of Fe3+ on the sludge properties and microbial community structure in a lab-scale A2O process

Lanhe Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that an appropriate concentration of Fe3+ can enhance the removal efficiencies of COD and TN in wastewater treatment, while excessive concentration may lead to inhibition. Furthermore, the positive correlation between Fe3+ concentration and TP removal was attributed to the increased surface roughness for enhanced phosphorus adsorption onto activated sludge. Thauera was identified as the dominant bacterial genus, and certain bacteria showed good adaptability to high concentration of Fe3+ within the bacterial community. Gene families related to Carbohydrate Metabolism, Amino Acid Metabolism, Cell Motility, Membrane Transport, and Replication and Repair were found to be the most abundant functional genes in the metabolic pathways.
