Distributed assembly permutation flow-shop scheduling problem with sequence-dependent set-up times using a novel biogeography-based optimization algorithm

Jialin Huang et al.

Summary: This article proposes a novel biogeography-based optimization (NBBO) algorithm to solve the distributed assembly permutation flow-shop scheduling problem with sequence-dependent set-up times (DAPFSP-SDST). The algorithm generates two kinds of feasible solutions in the initialization phase and uses a sinusoidal migration model and modified product insertion method in the migration phase. In the mutation phase, a job insertion method is used to adjust the processing order of jobs in each product, combined with a local search method based on SDST to escape local optima.

Module-based product family design: systematic literature review and meta-synthesis

Leandro Gauss et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for a wider range of products has led to companies reconsidering their strategies to offer more product variants without compromising production efficiency, with the module-based product family (MBPF) design being seen as a way to manage this trade-off. However, the adoption of these methods has been hindered by their isolation and lack of a coherent organizing structure. A systematic literature review and meta-synthesis were conducted to connect 72 MBPF design methods and their instances into a functional model and structured classes of design problems, aiming to identify common underlying structures among methods developed in the past 20 years.

Sustainable modular product architecture design by Bi-level leader-follower joint optimization with switching-based meta-heuristic algorithm

Md Sanowar Hossain et al.

Summary: Traditional product architecture design often neglects interface complexity and conflicting goals, resulting in reduced design robustness and increased complexity for product assembly and recovery. To address these issues, this paper proposes a sustainable modular product architecture that enhances assemblability and recovery. By considering sustainable modular drivers along with architectural drivers, a bi-level leader-follower joint optimization model is formulated to optimize module granularity and reduce assembly costs within a coherent framework.
