Advances in Bioinspired Superhydrophobic Surfaces Made from Silicones: Fabrication and Application

Zhe Li et al.

Summary: As research on superhydrophobic materials inspired by nature continues, the preparation methods and applications of superhydrophobic surfaces made from silicone substrates are widely reported. Silicones are preferred due to their inherent hydrophobicity and processing ability. Despite the low mechanical stability, it can be improved through rational design. This review provides an overview of silicone-based superhydrophobic surfaces and their applications, serving as inspiration for polymer interfaces and colloid science development.

Vertical error control for the facade-cleaning robot equipped on a gondola

Kyungmin Kim et al.

Summary: With the increase in high-rise buildings, the need for cleaning and managing their facades has also increased. Facade-cleaning robots have been developed to protect human workers from danger. Among these robots, the gondola-mounted facade-cleaning robot has advantages such as obstacle overcoming, simplicity, cleaning ability, and easy installation. However, there are still challenges in cleaning around obstacles and dealing with disturbances. In this study, a z-axis manipulator is proposed to minimize uncleaned areas, using laser and light sensors to detect obstacles and utilizing H-infinity control to handle disturbances.

Engineered tourmaline/g-C3N4 composites for photocatalytic Fenton-like oxidation: Synergy of spontaneous interface polarization and surface iron circulations induced by minerals

Sijia Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, a graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based photocatalytic persulfate activation system enhanced by natural polarized Fe-containing mineral tourmaline was developed for efficient carbamazepine (CBZ) degradation. The degradation rate of CBZ conducted by tourmaline/g-C3N4 was 6.2 and 7.7 times higher than pristine g-C3N4 and tourmaline.

Composites of TiO2 pillared sericite: Synthesis, characterization and photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange

Yu Liang et al.

Summary: A series of TiO2 pillared sericite nanocomposites were prepared and their structure and properties were studied. The best photocatalytic properties were observed in the TiO2 pillared sericite composite calcined at 800 degrees C. Trapping experiment revealed the participation order of active species during the photodegradation process. Sericite enhances the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 pillared sericite nanocomposite. Sericite shows promise as a substrate in the field of photocatalysis due to its good photocatalytic activity, availability, and recyclability.

Superhydrophilic wollastonite-nanoTiO2 composite photocatalyst prepared by a wet grinding method: The effects of carriers and their application in the self-cleaning coatings

Run Zhou et al.

Summary: The wollastonite-nanoTiO(2) composite, WOT-PC, exhibits promising photocatalytic performance and recycling ability due to the stable chemical binding of Ca-O-Ti and Si-O-Ti, as well as the promotion of electron-hole separation efficiency by Ca-O-Ti. UPS analysis suggests that electron movement to the surface of TiO2 is facilitated after wollastonite supports nanoTiO(2), leading to enhanced photocatalytic performance. The superhydrophilicity and self-cleaning ability of WOT-PC make it a potential candidate for outdoor wall coatings.

Synthesis of self-cleaning and photoreactive spherical layered double oxide/polymer composite thin layers: Biofouling and inactivation of bacteria

Agota Deak et al.

Summary: Layered double oxide (LDO) photocatalyst microparticles with special radial lamellar orientation were synthesized, and a composite layer with dual superhydrophobic and photocatalytic properties was formed by incorporating the LDO particles in a fluoropolymer solution. Increasing the LDO content in the composite layers enhanced bacterial adhesion through electrostatic interactions. The structure and properties of the LDO and LDO/fluoropolymer composites were characterized. The study demonstrated the potential of the LDO/fluoropolymer composite layers for high bacterial adhesion and inactivation.

Enhanced ultraviolet shielding performances of TiO2 nanorods in different crystalline structures and illite-loaded composites

Jiahao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the UV shielding performance of TiO2 nanorods and illite composites, showing that rutile TiO2 nanorods with the best aspect ratio exhibited the best UV shielding performance. The illite-TiO2 composites, especially those loaded with rutile TiO2 nanorods, displayed improved UV shielding performance compared to pure TiO2 nanorods. These composites provide a promising method for developing better UV shielding agents with enhanced UV protection for cotton fabrics.

An Experimental Study for the Improvement of the Stain Resistance for Exterior Wall Paints in a Western City in China

Xiao Huang et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of the building industry in western cities during the period of Western Development in China, the paints industry has matured rapidly. Waterborne inorganic exterior wall paints have become popular due to reduced VOCs. However, stain resistance remains a major obstacle in the application and promotion of exterior wall paints in western cities in China. Experimental studies in Chongqing suggest that silicone-acrylic paint offers the best stain resistance, while pigment volume concentration and thickeners significantly impact the stain resistance of exterior wall paints.
