Synergetic effects of initial NH4+and Ca2+concentration on the formation vaterite using steamed ammonia liquid waste as a direct carbonation

Xuewen Song et al.

Summary: This investigation systematically examines the effects of initial NH4+ and Ca2+ concentrations on the crystal structure, morphology, particle size, and vaterite content. It is found that high concentrations of NH4+ and Ca2+ are advantageous for vaterite formation, and they have a synergistic role in promoting the formation of single phase vaterite. The potential mechanism of NH4+ and Ca2+ for vaterite formation is revealed based on the analysis of the properties of the initial reaction system in the presence of varying concentrations of NH4+ and Ca2+.

Production of aragonite whiskers by carbonation of fine recycled concrete wastes: An alternative pathway for efficient CO2 sequestration

Peiliang Shen et al.

Summary: In this study, a wet carbonation method was developed to produce aragonite whisker using fine recycled concrete waste (FRCW) for efficient CO2 capture and conversion. The operational factors, including MgCl2 concentration, temperature, CO2 concentration and duration, were investigated for the formation of aragonite. The results showed that this carbonation process can produce needle-like aragonite whisker-rich materials and capture a large amount of CO2 within a short time. The MgCl2 concentration and temperature were crucial for aragonite nucleation, while a lower CO2 concentration only slightly affected the carbonation rate without changing the carbonation products. The proposed approach offers a novel direction for CO2 sequestration.

An approach to improve compressive strength of cement paste at low temperature by carbonation curing

Lei Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel approach to improve the compressive strength of cement paste at low temperature through carbonation curing. The compressive strength of cement pastes under water-curing and CO2 curing at 5°C is investigated. Analytical techniques such as X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) are used to analyze the phase changes in carbonated cement pastes. It is found that carbonation curing significantly enhances the compressive strength of cement paste and leads to the formation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and silica gel. The results suggest that CO2 curing at low temperature is an effective and promising method for rapid compressive strength improvement in cement paste.

Function and effect of borax on magnesium phosphate cement prepared by magnesium slag after salt lake lithium extraction

Jinmei Dong et al.

Summary: Salt lake magnesium phosphate cement (SLMPC) was prepared using salt lake lithium extraction magnesium slag (MS) as raw material, and borax was added to investigate its effects on water-cement ratio, setting time, compressive strength, and strength retention of SLMPC. The results showed that the incorporation of borax could reduce the water-cement ratio, delay the setting time, and reduce the 7-day compressive strength of SLMPC, but significantly improve its water resistance.

Characteristics of CSH under carbonation and its effects on the hydration and microstructure of cement paste

Bao Lu et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the characteristics of synthesized calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) during the carbonation process and the effects of CSH and carbonated C-S-H (CCSH) seeds on the performance of cement pastes. The result showed that CCSH is composed of 68.4% calcite and 31.6% silica gel and can absorb 301 g CO2 per kg C-S-H. The addition of CCSH significantly improved the cement hydration and led to a denser pore structure due to the higher surface area and the generated calcite and silica gel.

CO2 sequestration and CaCO3 recovery with steel slag by a novel two-step leaching and carbonation method

Can Cheng et al.

Summary: The steel smelting process generates large amounts of CO2 and Ca-containing steel slag (SS), which leads to the waste of Ca resources due to the low value utilization of SS. This study proposes an innovative two-step leaching and carbonation method for efficient leaching, carbon sequestration, and high-value reuse of SS. The method significantly increases the leaching rate of activated Ca and achieves a high CO2 sequestration capacity. This work presents a strategy with potential for recycling SS and reducing carbon emissions.

Increasing flexural strength of CO2 cured cement paste by CaCO3 polymorph control

Fengshun Wu et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of Mg(OH)(2) on the in-situ formation of fibre-like aragonite and the mechanical properties of cement mortar subjected to accelerated carbonation. The addition of Mg(OH)(2) has a limited effect on the compressive strength but significantly improves the flexural strength of the carbonated samples. FTIR and XRD analysis confirm that aragonite, rather than calcite, becomes the dominant CaCO3 polymorph with more than 5% Mg(OH)(2) content. The in-situ formed fiber/needle-like aragonite increases the total porosity and refines the pore sizes of carbonated samples when Mg(OH)(2) is added.

Summary: This study investigated the use of gum arabic as a depressant of calcite in the apatite flotation, achieving successful separation of the two minerals. Through various experiments, it was found that gum arabic significantly depressed calcite but had no impact on apatite. The mechanism involved the adsorption of gum arabic on the calcite surface, enhancing its hydrophilicity and selectively depressing calcite during flotation.

Effect of sucrose on CO2 storage, vaterite content, and CaCO3 particle size in indirect carbonation using seawater

Geunyoung Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of adding sucrose to seawater in an indirect carbonation process. The results show that sucrose addition increases CO2 storage, vaterite content, and decreases the size of CaCO3 particles. Adding sucrose before Ca elution is more advantageous than adding sucrose after, as it leads to higher vaterite content and smaller particle size. This technology has the potential for economically producing small-sized pure vaterite using seawater and sucrose.
