Interstitial-driven local chemical order enables ultrastrong face-centered cubic multicomponent alloys

Zhufeng He et al.

Summary: This study presents a universal strategy for designing ultrastrong and ductile face-centered cubic (fcc) multicomponent alloys by introducing interstitial-driven local chemical order (LCO) through simple thermomechanical processing. Fine laths containing interstitial-driven LCO domains have been observed in a prototype FeMnCoCrN alloy, resulting in an ultra-high yield strength of 1.34 GPa and a uniform elongation of 13.9%. This design strategy has also been successfully applied to a multicomponent austenitic steel, suggesting its potential in developing high-performance fcc materials at low cost.

Heterogeneous microstructural design with a bimodal grain size distribution of a multicomponent alloy by reversion from a strain-induced martensite

Gwun Seong Jeong et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to design a simple thermo-mechanical process to improve the strength level of multicomponent alloys without sacrificing ductility. By using a reversion process from strain-induced BCC to FCC, a bimodal-grained distribution was achieved. The alloy displayed an excellent combination of strength and ductility, with a yield strength two to three times higher than conventional FCC-based alloys, likely due to the bi-modal-grained distribution and active transformation-induced plasticity in metastable ultrafine FCC grains.

Heterogeneous-structure-induced ultrahigh strength and ductility in a metastable dual-phase Fe60Cr15Ni16Al9 medium entropy alloy

Ran Wei et al.

Summary: The emergence of medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) provides new insights for the design of the next generation structural alloys. In this study, Fe60Cr15Ni15Co10-xAlx (x = 0, 3, 5 and 7 at.%) and Fe60Cr15Ni16Al9 MEAs were designed and prepared. The results show that the volume fraction of body-centered-cubic (BCC) phase increases with the increase of Al content, and replacing Co with Al significantly promotes deformation-induced martensitic transformation from the face-centered-cubic (FCC) to BCC phase in these MEAs. The Fe60Cr15Ni16Al9 MEA with dual-phase structure exhibits excellent mechanical properties at room and cryogenic temperatures.

Ultrahigh cryogenic strength and ductility in a duplex metastable ferrous medium-entropy alloy

Qiuyu Gao et al.

Summary: This work presents a unique low-cost medium-entropy alloy (MEA) with ultra-high strength and ductility. The MEA exhibits a duplex partially recrystallized microstructure consisting of FCC and BCC phases, along with high density dislocations and nano-precipitates. It shows excellent yield strength and uniform elongation at both room temperature and cryogenic temperatures, as well as a high ultimate tensile strength at 77K. The excellent cryogenic mechanical properties can be attributed to various factors including high density dislocations, ultra-fine grains, nano-precipitates, Luders deformation, hetero-deformation-induced hardening, and deformation-induced martensitic transformation.

High strain rate deformation of aged TRIP Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al (wt.%) examined by in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction

B. Ellyson et al.

Summary: Aged TRIP Ti-10V-2Fe-3Al alloy exhibits higher elongations and flow stresses as the strain rate increases, due to tuning of phase stability and microstructural characteristics. However, increasing aging time and/or strain rate reduces the overall propensity for the TRIP effect and extent of transformation. TRIP with omega phase precipitation provides interesting design strategies for engineering applications requiring high strains and energy absorption.

Annealing-induced abnormally ultrahigh cryogenic strength-ductility synergy in a cold rolled ferrous medium entropy alloy

Zhenhua Han et al.

Summary: A Fe65Ni15Cr10Co10 medium entropy alloy (MEA) with a heterogeneous microstructure was produced using cold rolling and low temperature annealing. The cold rolled and low temperature annealed specimen exhibited abnormally high yield strength and ductility at -196 degrees C compared to the cold rolled specimen. This phenomenon is mainly attributed to the synergy of hetero-deformation induced (HDI) strengthening, boundary strengthening, and transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) effect.

Summary: Engineering metallic materials with excellent mechanical properties, especially strength and ductility, are highly sought after for various applications. Novel approaches to enhance strength-ductility synergy through heterogeneous microstructures have proven effective in overcoming the traditional strength-ductility trade-off. The discovery of high entropy alloys based on multi-principal elements offers wider possibilities for alloy design and the exploration of new alloys with remarkable properties.

Summary: The complex phase evolution sequence of a promising new high temperature structural alloy Al20Cr20Fe35Ni20Ti5 has been studied in situ using electromagnetic levitation and time-resolved high energy X-ray diffraction, as well as scanning transmission electron microscopy observations. The results show that the alloy initially forms primary dendrites of A2-structured body-centered cubic phase, followed by ordered B2-structured phase in interdendritic regions. Ordered B2 precipitates form within the primary A2-structured dendrites, while the interdendritic B2 regions undergo a continuous decomposition reaction below the solidus. Below approximately 1380 K, the B2 domains likely undergo a continuous ordering transition to the L2 1 phase.

Outstanding cryogenic strength-ductility properties of a cold-rolled medium-entropy TRIP Fe65(CoNi)25Cr9.5C0.5 alloy

E. Povolyaeva et al.

Summary: A new medium-entropy Fe-65(CoNi)(25)Cr9.5C0.5 alloy was investigated for its properties at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures. The alloy exhibited high strength, good ductility, and excellent fracture toughness at cryogenic temperatures. The microstructure analysis suggested a phase transition induced by deformation, and the cold-rolled alloy showed improved mechanical properties compared to the as-cast alloy. Substructure strengthening, interphase strengthening, and solid solution strengthening were identified as contributing factors to the alloy's enhanced performance.
