Synthesis of Manganese Zinc Ferrite Nanoparticles in Medical-Grade Silicone for MRI Applications

Joshua A. Stoll et al.

Summary: The aim of this project is to fabricate hydrogen-rich silicone doped with magnetic nanoparticles for use as a temperature change indicator in MRI-guided thermal ablations. The nanoparticles were synthesized directly in a medical-grade silicone polymer solution to avoid clustering. The synthesized nanoparticles exhibited superparamagnetic behavior and can potentially be used as a temperature indicator in high-temperature MRI-guided ablations.

1H-NMR Relaxation of Ferrite Core-Shell Nanoparticles: Evaluation of the Coating Effect

Francesca Brero et al.

Summary: We investigated the effect of different organic coatings on the H-1-NMR relaxation properties of ultra-small iron-oxide-based magnetic nanoparticles. Magnetization measurements revealed similar behavior as a function of temperature and field for nanoparticles with different coatings but the same core diameter. However, the H-1-NMR longitudinal relaxivity showed different intensity and frequency behavior for the smallest particles depending on the kind of coating, indicating different electronic spin dynamics. On the other hand, no differences were found in the relaxivity of the biggest particles when the coating was changed.

Magnetic particle based MRI thermometry at 0.2 T and 3 T

John Stroud et al.

Summary: This study explores the pros and cons of using ferrite particles embedded in agar gel phantoms as MRI temperature indicators for low-field scanners. The researchers compare the temperature-dependent intensity of MR images at low-field (0.2 T) and high-field (3.0 T). Despite the lower signal-to-noise ratio, MRI scanners operating at 0.2 T can achieve a temperature measurement uncertainty of about +/- 1.0 degrees C at 37 degrees C for a 90 mu g/mL concentration of magnetic particles.

One-Step Preparation of Highly Stable Copper-Zinc FerriteNanoparticles in Water Suitable for MRI Thermometry

Dorota Lachowicz et al.

Summary: In this study, copper-zinc ferrite nanoparticles coated with a poly(ethylene glycol) layer were synthesized and embedded into agarose gel, successfully designing a novel temperature-sensitive contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The experimental results showed a strong correlation between temperature and image intensity in MR images of the contrast agent under a temperature gradient.

Employing gadolinium micro-disks as temperature probes for magnetic resonance imaging

J. E. Nobles et al.

Summary: In this paper, the effectiveness of using uniform gadolinium micro-disks as MRI temperature sensors is demonstrated. The temperature dependence of the mass magnetization of gadolinium is correlated with the nuclear magnetic resonance linewidth broadening of water hydrogen nuclei in a phantom. The results show a strong correlation between the brightness of T-2* weighted MRI images and phantom temperatures, indicating that gadolinium micro-disks are a good candidate for use as MRI temperature sensors.

Summary: The MTT assay is commonly used in studies of cell toxicity, but it is often misinterpreted. Our research found that the assay measurements are influenced by various factors and require optimization and rational interpretation of the data to avoid misleading conclusions. While the assay can be a powerful tool, it also has limitations.

Measurement of sub-zero temperatures in MRI using T1 temperature sensitive soft silicone materials: Applications for MRI-guided cryosurgery

Janusz H. Hankiewicz et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a strong correlation between the nuclear relaxation time T-1 in soft silicone polymers and temperature, which can be used to monitor temperature changes in MRI. The results show that temperature-dependent changes in MRI intensity can be clearly observed and potentially applied in MRI-guided cryoablation procedures.
