Influence of Microstructure and Alloy Composition on the Machinability of α/β Titanium Alloys

Mostafa M. M. Shehata et al.

Summary: In this study, the machining of two alpha/beta titanium alloys, Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-7Nb, was investigated using wire electric discharge machining. The results showed that employing the trim-cut mode significantly reduced the surface roughness and the thickness of the recast layer.

The hardening effect of deformation twinning based on visco-plastic self consistent model and a multi-scale grain refinement prediction model during machining of titanium alloy

Qingqing Wang et al.

Summary: The hardening mechanisms of deformation twins in the machined surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloy were investigated. It was found that increasing cutting speeds led to different levels of grain refinement and the generation of nano twins. Both grain refinement and nano twins caused inhomogeneous hardening in the machined surface of Ti-6Al-4V.

Machinability analysis of Ti-6Al-4V under cryogenic condition

Muhammad Ali Khan et al.

Summary: Aerospace alloys are difficult to cut materials due to their low thermal conductivity, high temperature strength, and elevated chemical reactivity. This study aimed to improve the machinability and productivity of these alloys by using cryogenic conditions. The researchers developed a tool wear map under cryogenic conditions and found that cutting speed and feed rate were directly related to the formation of different wear regions. The presence of TiN in the avoidance zone was found to increase the tool chip contact length. The study also observed a decrease in shear angle and an increase in chip compression ratio, leading to elevated cutting zone temperature and wear. The analysis showed that cryogenic media enhanced tool life up to 100% compared to dry conditions. The cryogenic tool wear map emphasized the importance of choosing machining parameters carefully, resulting in an increase in MRR up to 36% and tool life up to 58%.

Influence of workpiece texture and strain hardening on chip formation during machining of Ti-6Al-4V alloy

Karthik Palaniappan et al.

Summary: This work investigates the influence of texture on chip formation during machining of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Different textures were produced using cold-rolling, and the morphology of chips varied between cold-worked and annealed samples due to the developed texture. The developed texture affects the strain necessary for fracture initiation in the primary shear zone, thus affecting the spatial frequency of segmentation.

Machinability of additively manufactured titanium alloys: A comprehensive review

Guangxian Li et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive review on the machinability of titanium alloys fabricated by various additive manufacturing (AM) techniques. By analyzing factors such as cutting forces, surface finish, and tool wear, it was found that the improvement in mechanical properties of AMed Ti resulted in higher cutting forces and temperatures, which significantly affected tool wear and surface quality. However, there is limited literature on significantly improving the machinability of AMed Ti components, suggesting a need for future research.

Effect of Aging and Cooling Path on the Super β-Transus Heat-Treated Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Produced via Electron Beam Melting (EBM)

Alessandro Carrozza et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the effect of different heat treatments on the Ti-6Al-4V alloy processed by electron beam melting (EBM). The results show that super beta-transus annealing reduces anisotropy generated by the EBM process and the aging treatment further improves the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy.
