Clinical Evaluation of Patients with Genetically Confirmed Familial Hypercholesterolemia

Andrea Aparicio et al.

Summary: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disorder associated with premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular (CV) disease (ASCVD). However, it is often not diagnosed correctly. Initiating lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) early in life can significantly reduce ASCVD risk in FH patients. Genetic testing can be useful in identifying FH.

Genetic Testing in Familial Hypercholesterolemia: Is It for Everyone?

A. M. Medeiros et al.

Summary: Lipid measurements and genetic testing are the main diagnostic tools for FH screening, but early diagnosis and unified identification of patients require a higher priority in healthcare systems worldwide. The recognition of pediatric screening for FH as a best practice in non-communicable disease prevention highlights the importance of early detection. Implementing governmental FH identification programs can reduce the risk of coronary artery disease and provide health and socioeconomic gains.

A proof-of-concept study of cascade screening for Familial Hypercholesterolemia in the US, adapted from the Dutch model

Mary P. McGowan et al.

Summary: The Dutch cascade screening model for FH has been successful, but its feasibility in the US is uncertain. A proof-of-concept study by the US-based FH Foundation showed that engaging with FH probands and their relatives outside usual healthcare settings can significantly increase screening rates for FH in the US. The study found that only 18% of families had been previously screened, but after engaging with the FH Foundation, 55% of families were willing to participate in cascade screening.
