Cleaning Strategies of Synthesized Bioactive Coatings by PEO on Ti-6Al-4V Alloys of Organic Contaminations

Avital Schwartz et al.

Summary: This research studied the impact of various cleaning methods on coating morphology and their effectiveness in removing organic contaminants. Bioactive coatings containing titanium oxides and hydroxyapatite were obtained through plasma electrolytic oxidation. The results showed that samples obtained from molten salt had a finer crystalline structure compared to those obtained from aqueous electrolytes. After applying surface cleaning methods, the carbon content decreased, indicating a reduction in organic contaminations. The most effective and moderate cleaning method was ozone treatment.

Avik Samanta et al.

Summary: An innovative laser-assisted functionalization method is proposed to fabricate a superhydrophobic-superhydrophilic patterned surface on a large-area metal alloy, with two different strategies demonstrated. Adjusting laser parameters allows for surface topography patterning and anti-reflection surface properties to be achieved. This method decouples extreme wettability from surface topography, showing simplicity, robustness, and feasibility.

Enhanced corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy by plasma electrolytic oxidation plus hydrothermal treatment

Jinhe Dou et al.

Summary: Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) is an effective surface treatment technique for enhancing the corrosion resistance of Mg alloy, but the micro-pores and micro-cracks of the PEO coating can limit its protection capability. In this study, a dense Ca3Al2(OH)(12) layer was fabricated on the PEO coating surface using hydrothermal treatment (HT) to create a PEO/HT composite coating, which showed improved bioactivity and corrosion resistance compared to PEO coating and Mg alloy. The growth process of the Ca3Al2(OH)(12) layer on the PEO coating surface was discussed.

Summary: A finite element model was developed to predict the protection mechanisms offered by Mg-based organic coatings on AA2024-T351 alloy. The critical pH value for corrosion potential decrease was in accordance with experimental observations. The model also calculated the feasibility of pH-induced repassivation mechanism under different water layer thickness and inhibition of oxygen reduction reaction. This framework can help identify chemical inhibitors that operate by the described chemical protection mode.

Flake aluminum reinforced polyamideimide-polytetrafluoroethylene bonded solid lubricating composite coating for wear resistance and corrosion protection

Guihua Li et al.

Summary: A solid lubricating composite coating (PAI/PTFE/Al) with excellent tribological properties and corrosion resistance was prepared through a spraying process. Results showed that the coating containing 30 wt% flake aluminum exhibited optimal mechanical, tribological, and corrosion resistance properties. The improvement in tribological properties was attributed to the mechanical properties of aluminum flakes and lubricating properties of PTFE, while the enhanced corrosion resistance was due to the combined effects of PTFE's hydrophobic properties and aluminum flakes' shielding effect and cathodic protection.
