Polymeric microneedles enable simultaneous delivery of cancer immunomodulatory drugs and detection of skin biomarkers

Pere Dosta et al.

Summary: This study reports on the design of a microneedle (MN) platform capable of delivering immune activators and collecting interstitial skin fluid (ISF) to monitor therapeutic responses. The MNs showed effective transdermal drug delivery into immune cells in the tumor microenvironment, enabling the study of immune response to therapy over time. This platform has potential for theranostic applications.

Shape of dissolving microneedles determines skin penetration ability and efficacy of drug delivery

Hye Su Min et al.

Summary: Dissolving microneedles (DMNs) are used for minimally invasive transdermal drug delivery. The insertion depth of DMN is crucial for accurate drug delivery, but the standard for incomplete insertion is unknown. In this study, we analyzed the volumetric distribution of three types of DMN shapes and introduced a new insertion evaluation criterion. Our approach considered the correlation between DMN shape and insertion depth, providing insights for DMN design and maximizing drug delivery.

A Single-Administration Microneedle Skin Patch for Multi-Burst Release of Vaccine against SARS-CoV-2

Khanh T. M. Tran et al.

Summary: This study presents a new approach to thermally stabilize protein-based antigens and develops a single-administration microneedle patch for delivering a COVID-19 vaccine model. The results show that the new vaccine is stable at high temperatures and average human body temperature, and can induce the same level of immune response as multiple injections stored under conventional cold-chain conditions.

Beneath the Skin: A Review of Current Trends and Future Prospects of Transdermal Drug Delivery Systems

Ahlam Zaid Alkilani et al.

Summary: Transdermal drug delivery (TDD) is a non-invasive approach that is convenient and easy to use, especially for vulnerable age groups. However, its applicability is limited to drugs with specific physicochemical properties due to the barrier posed by the skin. Various techniques, including chemical and passive methods, have been investigated to enhance drug permeability across the skin. Hybrid approaches combining chemical penetration enhancement technologies with physical technologies are also being intensely researched.
