Standards of Care for the Health of Transgender and Gender Diverse People, Version 8

Summary: This study introduces the latest developments in transgender healthcare and the role of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and its Standards of Care (SOC). SOC-8 is a new set of guidelines for transgender healthcare, aiming to provide healthcare professionals with clinical guidance to assist transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals in achieving comfort and overall health. The guidelines are based on the best available science and expert consensus, and recommendations were developed through systematic literature reviews and expert opinions.

Summary: Nonbinary people, who make up approximately one third of the trans community, may face greater mental health disparities compared to binary trans people. However, research has yet to explore the unique minority stress experiences among nonbinary individuals. This qualitative study conducted by an all nonbinary research team comprehensively identified the minority stress experiences of nonbinary adults, revealing new stressors and providing implications for clinical interventions, policy, and future research.

Deferral: the sociology of young trans people's epiphanies and coming out

Summary: This paper presents data characterizing young trans people's experience during the period prior to coming out to parents as transgender. The data indicate that there are two parts to this period known as the 'Deferral' period, namely the 'Tacit Deferral' period before realizing one's trans identity and the subsequent 'Discursive Deferral' period. These deferral periods can vary in length but are usually measured in months or years. The analysis of the ways young trans people construct their identities reveals commonalities and differences, emphasizing the agency of young trans and non-binary individuals in overcoming barriers to transitioning.

Training in gender identity and dysphoria is recommended for medical professionals, and decentralization of gender identity development services with local support hubs could improve accessibility.
