Origins of Barents-Kara sea-ice interannual variability modulated by the Atlantic pathway of El Nino-Southern Oscillation

Binhe Luo et al.

Summary: This paper finds that the winter sea-ice over the Barents-Kara Seas has exhibited strengthened interannual variations in recent decades likely due to increased amplitudes of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation in a warming climate.

Subseasonal swing of cold and warm extremes between Eurasia and North America in winter of 2020/21: initiation and physical process

Shuangmei Ma et al.

Summary: Eurasia and North America experienced a strong subseasonal swing of surface air temperature extremes in the 2020/21 winter. This swing had severe impacts on human activities and the global economy. The alternating extremes were caused by annual cycle anomalies of surface air temperature and the phase transition of the North-Pacific-Oscillation-like Rossby wave.

The Alternating Change of Cold and Warm Extremes Over North Asia During Winter 2020/21: Effect of the Annual Cycle Anomaly

Minjie Yu et al.

Summary: The large-scale cold and warm spells in North Asia have caused a subseasonal alternation of extreme surface air temperature. The synergistic effect of the annual cycle and intraseasonal oscillation of temperature and circulation anomalies is responsible for temperature extremes before and after mid-January 2021.

Influence of Arctic Sea Ice Concentration on Extended-Range Prediction of Strong and Long-Lasting Ural Blocking Events in Winter

Xueying Ma et al.

Summary: The predictability of strong and long-lasting Ural blocking (UB) formation in extended-range prediction is influenced by the Arctic sea ice concentration (SIC), particularly the SIC perturbations in the Greenland Sea, Barents Sea, and Okhotsk Sea. These perturbations affect the local temperature field and zonal winds in the Ural sector, influencing UB formation.

Impact of the Pacific sector sea ice loss on the sudden stratospheric warming characteristics

Jiarong Zhang et al.

Summary: The impact of large sea ice loss over the Chukchi-Bering Seas on the sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) phenomenon during the easterly phase of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation is investigated. The study shows that the prescribed sea ice loss induces near-surface warming that persists into winter and deepens as the SSW develops, leading to a deep cyclonic circulation over the North Pacific and reinforcing the climatological planetary wave pattern in the stratosphere. The amplified wave forcing in the stratosphere significantly increases SSW duration and intensity, enhancing cold air outbreaks over the continents afterward.

Influence and prediction value of Arctic sea ice for spring Eurasian extreme heat events

Jianqi Sun et al.

Summary: Statistical analyses have shown that variations in winter sea ice concentrations in the Barents-Kara seas are associated with extreme heat events over Eurasia in the following spring. The anomalies in winter sea ice over the Barents-Kara Seas play a dominant role in the interannual variation of spring extreme heat events over mid-to-high latitude Eurasia in the recent two decades. The winter sea ice anomalies enhance the troposphere-stratosphere interactions and influence the spring atmospheric circulations, leading to the formation of Eurasian extreme heat events.

Summary: The study found that drastic temperature shifts during winter temperature whiplash events in North China are closely related to the southeastward propagation of dipolar anomalous temperatures in the middle and lower troposphere over the Eurasian continent, showing different temperature patterns during negative and positive events.

Sudden Stratospheric Warmings

Mark P. Baldwin et al.

Summary: Sudden stratospheric warmings (SSWs) are impressive fluid dynamical events characterized by large and rapid temperature increases in the winter polar stratosphere, which are usually caused by the breaking of planetary-scale waves propagating upwards from the troposphere. SSWs result in the breakdown of the polar vortex, along with rapid descent and warming of air in polar latitudes, affecting tropospheric weather and potentially leading to cold air outbreaks over North America and Eurasia.

Influence of Eurasian Spring Snowmelt on Surface Air Temperature in Late Spring and Early Summer

Juan Zhou et al.

Summary: The study examines the impact of Eurasian spring snowmelt on surface air temperature in late spring and early summer, finding that Siberian spring snowmelt has a significant influence. Increased Siberian spring snowmelt leads to higher late spring SAT and lower early summer SAT through changes in surface albedo, cloud cover, soil moisture, and sensible heat. The simulation of Eurasian spring snowmelt variability and its effects on SAT remains a challenge for climate models.

Linking Arctic variability and change with extreme winter weather in the United States

Judah Cohen et al.

Summary: The Arctic is warming at a rate twice the global average, leading to increased severe winter weather in many mid-latitude regions. Research shows a physical link between a lesser-known stratospheric polar vortex disruption and extreme cold in parts of Asia and North America. Numerical modeling experiments support a connection between Arctic change and the stretching of the stratospheric polar vortex and its surface impacts.
