Model emulators for the assessment of regional impacts and risks of climate change: A case study of rainfed maize production in Mexico

Francisco Estrada et al.

Summary: The collection of databases on climate change and its impacts is abundant but does not always satisfy the varying information needs of users. The use of emulators can bridge this information gap by approximating complex model outputs and enabling user-defined experiments. This study presents an emulator for the EPIC crop model, capable of reproducing changes in rainfed maize and creating projections for user-defined scenarios. Results show that climate change could have significant consequences for rainfed maize production in Mexico, and international mitigation efforts play a crucial role in modulating these impacts.

Geographies of science and technology III: Careful entanglements, responsible futures

Martin Mahony

Summary: In this final report, the author focuses on care as a concept, emotion, practice, politics, and moral exhortation, which has become a significant subject of research in critical geography. The author explores the potential of centering care within geographical engagements with science and technology and suggests that studying care in detail provides valuable insights into the everyday geographies of technoscience and political strategies for building alternative lifeworlds.

Baroque tools for climate action. What do we learn from a catalogue of local technologies?

Tomas Ariztia et al.

Summary: This article discusses the development of a local technologies catalog for climate action in Chile, which aims to showcase various tools, strategies, and practices developed and/or adapted by communities to tackle specific socio-environmental problems. The article reflects on the process of creating the catalog and explores the nature and role of these technologies as tools for climate action. It also highlights the challenges involved in cataloging and presents three theoretical aspects that emerge from the mapped technologies.

Democracy in a deluge: Epistemic agency of marginalized voices in Oaxaca's storm governance

Anna Bridel

Summary: Despite the repeated calls for grassroots participation in climate policy making, understanding the epistemic agency of marginalized voices remains limited. This study explores the concept of civic epistemologies as expectations of democracy and examines their role in authorizing climate expertise in fragmented or marginalized civic contexts. The findings provide insights into why attempts to include marginalized voices in climate policy often fail and highlight opportunities for intervention in climate risk governance.

Climate change research and action must look beyond 2100

Christopher Lyon et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic activity is altering Earth's climate and ecosystems in ways that could be dangerous and disruptive to humans. The rise in greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere is projected to have lasting effects beyond 2100. This calls for a need to focus on long-term planning and policy measures to address the impacts of climate change.

Politics of attributing extreme events and disasters to climate change

Myanna Lahsen et al.

Summary: Climate change affects weather events, but attributing disasters solely to climate may overlook social and political factors. Analytic frameworks for disaster causes should be sensitive to political meanings and context-dependent factors. A multi-causal analysis is needed to reduce damages associated with climate change and weather extremes.

Extinction magnitude of animals in the near future

Kunio Kaiho

Summary: There have been five major mass extinctions and some minor mass extinctions of animals since early animal diversification 540-520 million years ago. It is predicted that a sixth mass extinction is already taking place. However, the exact magnitude of this future extinction has not been quantitatively estimated. The author suggests that while a sixth major mass extinction (defined as >60% species loss) will be avoided, a minor mass extinction of 20-50% animal species loss will occur if humans continue to cause nuclear war and/or fail to address increasing greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and deforestation until 2060-2080 CE. By reducing emissions, pollution, and deforestation within 40 years and preventing nuclear war, the loss of animal species could be limited to 10-15%. It is crucial for humans to take action and not only reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions but also address deforestation, environmental pollution, and the risk of nuclear war to prevent this mass extinction. Failure to do so will result in significant decreases in biodiversity and the human population, as well as an ecological imbalance on Earth.

Enriching the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways to co-create consistent multi-sector scenarios for the UK

Simona Pedde et al.

Summary: As the pressure to address global warming intensifies, scenarios that incorporate various social, economic, and environmental factors are crucial to support climate change mitigation or adaptation actions by governments and stakeholders. While climate models have widely applied RCPs for producing climate scenarios, the scaling of SSPs for geographic and sectoral applications is still relatively new, with the UK lacking its own version of SSPs. Therefore, developing UK-specific SSPs has become a pressing need to balance consistency and legitimacy in addressing climate change impacts.

More wind energy colonialism(s) in Oaxaca? Reasonable findings, unacceptable development

Summary: This Perspective article offers a critical intervention to Jacobo Ramirez and Steffen Bohm's article on wind energy investments, pointing out issues with their usage of the term 'transactional colonialism' and their reduction of complexity in the actors in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, along with their uncritical appraisal of wind energy technologies and Sustainable Development Goal 7.

Climate services promise better decisions but mainly focus on better data

Kieran Findlater et al.

Summary: Climate services aim to improve climate-sensitive decisions by making climate information 'useful, useable and used', but in reality there is more focus on providing data rather than improving processes and decision-making. Norms and institutions in climate science create tensions that reduce the impact of climate services, leading to conflicts between climate services and climate science, limiting the transformative potential of climate services.

Good Sediment: Race and Restoration in Coastal Louisiana

Monica Patrice Barra

Summary: Building on existing scholarship, this article explores the intersection of sediment, science, and race in the context of coastal restoration in Louisiana. Through ethnographic field work and historical research with African-American communities and coastal scientists, the author expands on the concept of geosocial registers of the Anthropocene, arguing that coastal restoration is a site where racial inequality is both formed and contested. The conclusion suggests that environmental restoration can contribute to creating alternative forms of social and environmental repair, aligning coastal science goals with racial justice for communities of color in changing coastal landscapes.

Geographies of science and technology 1: Boundaries and crossings

Martin Mahony

Summary: In a world of accelerating environmental crises, global pandemics, and datafication, the politics of science and technology are pervasive. This report focuses on the definitional questions and spatial effects of the geographies of technoscience, identifying convergences around political economy and scale as an emergent property. Geographers are disrupting traditional boundaries and hierarchies of technoscientific practice while also exploring the spatial practices through which technoscience interacts with wider worlds like politics and policymaking.
