Model emulators for the assessment of regional impacts and risks of climate change: A case study of rainfed maize production in Mexico

Summary: The collection of databases on climate change and its impacts is abundant but does not always satisfy the varying information needs of users. The use of emulators can bridge this information gap by approximating complex model outputs and enabling user-defined experiments. This study presents an emulator for the EPIC crop model, capable of reproducing changes in rainfed maize and creating projections for user-defined scenarios. Results show that climate change could have significant consequences for rainfed maize production in Mexico, and international mitigation efforts play a crucial role in modulating these impacts.

This study explores the concept of civic epistemologies as expectations of democracy and examines their role in authorizing climate expertise in fragmented or marginalized civic contexts. The findings provide insights into why attempts to include marginalized voices in climate policy often fail and highlight opportunities for intervention in climate risk governance.

Extinction magnitude of animals in the near future

Summary: There have been five major mass extinctions and some minor mass extinctions of animals since early animal diversification 540-520 million years ago. It is predicted that a sixth mass extinction is already taking place. However, the exact magnitude of this future extinction has not been quantitatively estimated. The author suggests that while a sixth major mass extinction (defined as >60% species loss) will be avoided, a minor mass extinction of 20-50% animal species loss will occur if humans continue to cause nuclear war and/or fail to address increasing greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and deforestation until 2060-2080 CE. By reducing emissions, pollution, and deforestation within 40 years and preventing nuclear war, the loss of animal species could be limited to 10-15%. It is crucial for humans to take action and not only reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions but also address deforestation, environmental pollution, and the risk of nuclear war to prevent this mass extinction. Failure to do so will result in significant decreases in biodiversity and the human population, as well as an ecological imbalance on Earth.

Summary: As the pressure to address global warming intensifies, scenarios that incorporate various social, economic, and environmental factors are crucial to support climate change mitigation or adaptation actions by governments and stakeholders. While climate models have widely applied RCPs for producing climate scenarios, the scaling of SSPs for geographic and sectoral applications is still relatively new, with the UK lacking its own version of SSPs. Therefore, developing UK-specific SSPs has become a pressing need to balance consistency and legitimacy in addressing climate change impacts.

Good Sediment: Race and Restoration in Coastal Louisiana

The conclusion suggests that environmental restoration can contribute to creating alternative forms of social and environmental repair, aligning coastal science goals with racial justice for communities of color in changing coastal landscapes.
