Modelling Dominant Tree Heights of Fagus sylvatica L. Using Function-on-Scalar Regression Based on Forest Inventory Data

Markus Engel et al.

Summary: European beech is an important tree species in Europe, but its suitable habitats are expected to change due to climate change. Finding economically viable and ecologically resilient provenances is an ongoing research field.

Using ensemble modeling to predict the impacts of assisted migration on recipient ecosystems

Katie Peterson et al.

Summary: Assisted migration is a controversial conservation measure aimed at protecting threatened species by moving some of their populations outside their natural range. This study used an ensemble modeling framework to estimate the risks of assisted migration to existing species within ecosystems, finding that successful establishment of translocated species in stable, high-quality habitats has a probability of 83%, but can result in an average of 0.6 extinctions.

Seedlings from marginal and core populations of European beech (Fagus sylvaticaL.) respond differently to imposed drought and shade

Fang Wang et al.

Summary: Local adaptation largely segregates between traits affecting light responses and water relations, but population-level differences in stomatal conductance converge among populations under water stress. High light and water stress induced differences in trait responses among provenances, but traits that failed to respond to experimental treatments likewise did not segregate at the provenance level.

Phenological and elevational shifts of plants, animals and fungi under climate change in the European Alps

Yann Vitasse et al.

Summary: In the European Alps, increasing temperatures have led to glacier retreat and changes in the distribution of plants, animals and fungi. Spring phenology has shifted earlier and distribution ranges have moved upslope, with various taxonomic groups showing different rates of change. The overall upward shift in species distribution appears to be too slow to keep pace with the rate of climate warming, potentially leading to phenological and spatial mismatches in ecosystems.

High plasticity in germination and establishment success in the dominant forest tree Fagus sylvatica across Europe

Lena Muffler et al.

Summary: The study found that germination and establishment of European beech were highly plastic in response to environmental conditions, with germination success increasing under warmer conditions but establishment and survival being hampered under warmer and drier conditions. Although germination differed among populations and was influenced by seed weight, there was no evidence of local adaptation in any trait.
