Please Feel Free to Intervene: A Longitudinal Analysis of the Consequences of Bystander Behavioral Expectations

Summary: This study explores the potential of bystander intervention to mitigate the relationship between bias incidents and witnesses' perception of workplace climate and intention to leave. The results confirm that bias incidents increase turnover intentions by negatively impacting workplace climate. However, the expectation that colleagues will intervene if a bias incident occurs can reduce the negative impact on workplace climate.

A Systematic Review of Black People Coping With Racism: Approaches, Analysis, and Empowerment

Summary: This article reviews the current research literature on how Black people in Western societies regulate their emotions when coping with racism. Findings demonstrate that they tend to cope through social support, religion, avoidance, and problem-focused coping. Gender differences in coping strategies are also observed. Encouraging personal empowerment is highlighted for promoting psychological well-being. The article may inform mental-health interventions.

Developing Practices for Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Programs to Address Anti-Black Racism and Historical Trauma

Summary: In order to promote health equity among Black youth exposed to community violence, psychologists must collaborate with other healthcare professionals and communities with lived experience to address anti-Black racism and historical trauma as key factors contributing to violence-related health disparities. This article outlines a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach aimed at developing strategies for hospital-based violence intervention programs to reduce violence-related health inequities among Black youth. Current understanding of trauma symptoms among Black youth exposed to community violence often neglects the impact of anti-Black racism and historical trauma on the creation and persistence of traumatic stress. Through our CBPR formative studies, we emphasize the importance of addressing community violence within the context of anti-Black racism and historical trauma. By sharing our process, developed tools, and best practices, we aim to highlight the valuable contributions psychologists can make in advancing health equity through interdisciplinary collaborations and community engagement.

Structural equation modeling of microaggressions, religious and racism-related coping, medication adherence, and viral load among Black women living with HIV

Summary: Despite the disproportionate impact of HIV, microaggressions, and discrimination among Black women living with HIV (BWLWH), BWLWH have demonstrated resilience by mobilizing religious and other coping strategies. The study examined the relationship between gendered racial microaggressions (GRMs), antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, and viral load (VL) among 119 BWLWH. The results showed that religious coping had significant effects on adherence and VL, and the interactions between GRMs and racism-related coping and religious coping significantly predicted adherence and VL. These findings highlight the importance of religious and racism-related coping strategies in the context of GRMs among BWLWH and have implications for culturally relevant interventions.

Cultural Racism and Depression in Black Adolescents: Examining Racial Socialization and Racial Identity as Moderators Dismantling Systems of Racism and Oppression during Adolescence

Summary: This study explored parental racial socialization and racial regard as moderators of the effects of cultural racism on depression symptoms among Black adolescents. The findings suggest that racial messages transmitted to Black adolescents combined with their own racial attitudes can alter the effect of cultural racism on depression symptoms.

Academics of colour in elite universities in the UK and the USA: the 'unspoken system of exclusion'

Summary: This article explores the experiences of academics of colour in elite universities in the UK and the USA. It finds that they experience racism in these predominantly white universities and create 'safe spaces' for support. Despite negative experiences, they have conflicting feelings about their positions, recognizing the status and prestige associated with working at elite universities while distancing themselves from racism. To fully include academics of colour, institutions must acknowledge racism and work towards cultural change.

Summary: The paper explores the experiences of perceived prejudices faced by Black African mental health nurses in England. Findings show deep-rooted discrimination and marginalisation, as well as difficulties in achieving leadership roles due to ethnicity and English as a second language. Stakeholders are urged to act against hegemony and discriminatory barriers to help Black African nurses reach their full potential.

Understanding ethnic inequalities in mental healthcare in the UK: A meta-ethnography

Summary: This meta-ethnography study aims to understand the creation and persistence of ethnic inequalities in mental healthcare. The findings reveal that current mental healthcare approaches are perceived as major barriers to person-centered care for ethnic minority groups. The dominance of monocultural, reductionist frameworks and experiences of racist practice contribute to these inequalities. The lack of progress in addressing these issues is attributed to failures in coproduction and inadequate adoption of existing recommendations within services.
