A new species of Amphorotia (Bacillariophyta) from a freshwater section of the Pearl River with comments on associated species and biogeography of the genus

Ji-Shu Guo et al.

Summary: Based on a review of previous studies and new water samples, this study investigates the morphology and geographical distribution of species from the genus Amphorotia, especially in subtropical Asian coastal areas. Six species from China were identified, with characteristics such as amphoroid frustule symmetry, spines, and a single plastid. A new species, A. liangyanlingii sp. nov., was discovered in freshwater samples and compared with A. zhujiangensis using light and scanning electron microscopy.

Response of Diatoms to the Changing Water Quality in the Myristica Swamps of the Western Ghats, India

Mital Thacker et al.

Summary: Myristica swamps, one of the rarest wetland ecosystems in the Western Ghats, India, are characterized by acidic waterlogged conditions and harbor unique biotas. This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of the physical, chemical, and biological assessment of these swamps, focusing on diatoms as indicators of environmental changes. The results showed that the diatom assemblage, consisting of 91 species belonging to 27 genera, is strongly influenced by water chemistry, with certain species restricted to this unique environment. The study highlights the importance of further research to enhance our understanding of the diversity, ecology, and biogeography of these diatoms.

Phylogeny and Fatty Acid Profiles of New Pinnularia (Bacillariophyta) Species from Soils of Vietnam

Elena Kezlya et al.

Summary: The morphology, ultrastructure, and phylogeny of eight soil diatom strains assigned to the Pinnularia genus were studied, with six new species identified and described for the first time. Molecular phylogeny reconstruction grouped the new strains with different subclades within Pinnularia. Fatty acid profiles of the algae cultured on specific medium showed high yields of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, making the novel Pinnularia strains promising feedstock for biofuel production.
