Seismic tremor reveals active trans-crustal magmatic system beneath Kamchatka volcanoes

Cyril Journeau et al.

Summary: The occurrence and style of volcanic eruptions are influenced by magma storage and transport mechanisms from the mantle to the surface. However, our knowledge of the deep roots of volcano-magmatic systems is limited. In this study, seismovolcanic tremors were used to map the active part of the magmatic system beneath the Klyuchevskoy Volcanic Group in Russia. The tremors were found to be distributed throughout the crust, connecting different volcanoes, and their activity was characterized by rapid movements explained by pressure changes and permeability. These findings support the concept of extended and highly dynamic trans-crustal magmatic systems.

Margin-wide variations in slab dehydration in Cascadia and their relationship to slow slip

Morgan McLellan et al.

Summary: Slow slip events in subduction zones exhibit variations in behavior, including periodicity and magnitude, both within and across different zones. This study calculates thermal models for the Cascadia subduction zone and finds that temperature and slab geometry variations impact fluid flux rates near the mantle wedge corner where slow slip events occur. The study supports the idea that fluctuations in fluid production rate near the mantle wedge corner may control pore fluid pressure buildup and release during slow slip.

Forecasting tectonic tremor activity using a renewal process model

Satoshi Ide et al.

Summary: In this study, a stochastic renewal process is proposed to standardize and forecast tectonic tremor activity in the Nankai subduction zone. The model parameters are successfully estimated and a scaling relationship between characteristic times is derived. The model is able to forecast the occurrence of the next tremor event, making it a valuable tool for space-time forecasting of slow earthquakes.

Microseismic Constraints on the Mechanical State of the North Anatolian Fault Zone 13 Years After the 1999 M7.4 Izmit Earthquake

Eric Beauce et al.

Summary: This study used data from the Dense Array for North Anatolia (DANA) seismic network in 2012 to build a new catalog of microseismicity and analyzed its statistical properties. The study found that microseismicity mainly occurs off the main fault, with the most active regions being the Lake Sapanca step-over and near the Akyazi fault. Based on previous research, these microseismic activities are believed to be driven by residual stresses from the Izmit earthquake.

Episodic hydrofracturing and large-scale flushing along deep subduction interfaces: Implications for fluid transfer and carbon recycling (Zagros Orogen, southeastern Iran)

Jesus Munoz-Montecinos et al.

Summary: The study focuses on a segment of the Zagros suture zone in the late Cretaceous, revealing the widespread occurrence of blueschist-facies veins and aragonite-bearing hydraulic breccias under different conditions and processes. The findings suggest that fluid sources are related to deep fluid flow mechanisms and may contribute to the carbon sources in the subducting slab.

Field-Based Evidence for Intra-Slab High-Permeability Channel Formation at Eclogite-Facies Conditions During Subduction

Francesca Piccoli et al.

Summary: The study investigated a high-pressure metasomatic system preserved in Alpine Corsica, France, revealing the infiltration process of deep fluids. Fluid-mediated metasomatic process occurred along major intra-slab interfaces, accompanying two distinct metasomatic stages. The results indicate that when fluids are channelized, high time-integrated fluid fluxes lead to significantly increased carbon fluxes.

What's down there? The structures, materials and environment of deep-seated slow slip and tremor

Whitney M. Behr et al.

Summary: This article reviews the constraints on SST deformation processes, including geophysical observations and geological observations. Research shows that the SST source region is an environment rich in fluids and high fluid pressure. In regions of mixed lithology and near-lithostatic fluid pressures, a combination of frictional-viscous shear may scale with the tremor component of SST.

Complexity of Deep Low-Frequency Earthquake Activity in Shikoku (Japan) Imaged From the Analysis of Continuous Seismic Data

Summary: Researchers in Shikoku, Japan, created a detailed catalog of low-frequency earthquakes (LFEs) over a four-year period using advanced automatic detection and location methods. They found complex and heterogeneous characteristics in the distribution and behavior of LFEs, which may be related to the complexity of subduction zone structure, stress evolution, and possible presence of fluids. High-resolution LFE catalogs can provide valuable information for understanding slow earthquake processes and preparing for large events in subduction zones.

Constraining fault architecture and fluid flow using crustal noble gases

William K. Eymold et al.

Summary: Deformational features, such as faults, play a significant role in fluid flow in sedimentary basins, with their hydrologic properties varying widely from conduits to barriers. Crustal noble gases can serve as tracers of fluid flow in fault systems, providing insights into the timing of crustal isolation and hydraulic communication in fault zones. Future research can further explore their potential in evaluating geological formations for storage of gases or nuclear waste, as well as in understanding hydrocarbon accumulation and loss over geological time.

A common type of mineralogical banding in serpentine crack-seal veins

Matthew S. Tarling et al.

Summary: The study identifies a new type of mineralogically banded serpentine crack-seal vein, where thin bands of chrysotile are followed by thicker bands of polygonal serpentine/lizardite. This suggests a common set of processes involving crack opening and sealing in various structural sites within serpentinite-bearing faults and shear zones.

Episodicity and Migration of Low Frequency Earthquakes Modeled With Fast Fluid Pressure Transients in the Permeable Subduction Interface

Gaspard Farge et al.

Summary: The study explores how fluid pressure transients in a permeable subduction interface can trigger seismic sources and induce interactions between them. Low-permeability plugs behave as elementary fault-valves, generating seismic activity. The model predicts that the input fluid flux is a key control on activity occurrence and behavior, allowing new interpretations of low frequency seismic activity.
