Bowl-Shaped Bispyrrole-Fused Perylene-diimide and Its Anions

Xinyue Tian et al.

Summary: Incorporating two pyrrole subunits at the bay positions of perylene-diimide, PDI-2N, with a bowl depth of 1.52 angstrom, was successfully synthesized via one step Buchwald-Hartwig reaction. Despite the electron-rich pyrrole embedding, the radical anion and dianion of PDI-2N were easily prepared and investigated experimentally and theoretically. Furthermore, PDI-2N crystallized in different manners under distinct conditions, forming tubular crystals with infinite two-directional columnar stacking under DMF conditions. This discovery presents a promising bowl-shaped PDI derivative for organoelectronics.

Nitrogen-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by a one-pot Suzuki coupling/intramolecular SNAr reaction

Xiaoqi Tian et al.

Summary: A new method for synthesizing nitrogen-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was reported, which allows for the preparation of PAHs doped with graphitic nitrogen. The physical and chemical properties of these N-doped PAHs were investigated to explore their potential applications.

Facile Synthesis of Nitrogen-Doped Nanographenes with Joined Nonhexagons via a Ring Expansion Strategy

Huan Luo et al.

Summary: Researchers developed a facile and effective method to synthesize a series of nitrogen-doped nanographenes in acceptable yields. Modification of the heptagonal ring endowed the resultant nanographenes with tunable physicochemical properties. Moreover, novel nanographenes containing nitrogen-doped pentagon-octagon pairs were obtained using the same synthetic strategy, demonstrating the superior versatility and efficiency of the proposed ring expansion method.

π-Extended Pyrrole-Fused Heteropine: Synthesis, Properties, and Application in Organic Field-Effect Transistors

Weifan Wang et al.

Summary: Sulfur-embedded polycyclic aromatic compounds have been widely used in the construction of organic semiconductors, but investigations on aromatic compounds containing thiepine, a sulfur-containing seven-membered-ring arene, have been limited. This study presents the synthesis and properties of pi-extended pyrrole-fused thiepine and oxepine compounds. A pi-extended pyrrole-fused thiepine exhibited a tilted pi-stacking structure in the crystal and demonstrated a high charge carrier mobility of up to 1.0 cm(2) V-1 s(-1) in single-crystal field-effect transistors.

Liquid Crystalline Magneto-Optically Active Peralkylated Azacoronene

Leo Delage-Laurin et al.

Summary: Organic Faraday rotators have attracted attention as a cost-effective and mechanically superior alternative to inorganic magneto-optical materials. This study reports the synthesis of a dodecyl-substituted hexapyrrolohexaazacoronene (C-12-HPHAC) that exhibits discotic liquid crystalline properties and large Faraday rotation. Thin films with a mixed composition achieve a maximum Verdet constant of 3.36 x10(5) deg T-1 m(-1) at 700 nm, displaying one of the largest reported Verdet constants for organic materials in the UV-Vis range.
