Thermal equation of state of ice-VII revisited by single-crystal X-ray diffraction

Xiaojing Lai et al.

Summary: In this study, ice-VII single crystals were synthesized and their high-pressure and high-temperature phase stability and thermoelastic properties were investigated. The results provide important information for modeling the inner structure of icy cosmic bodies and understanding the formation of water-rich regions in Earth's deep mantle.

Graphite resistive heated diamond anvil cell for simultaneous high-pressure and high-temperature diffraction experiments

Huijeong Hwang et al.

Summary: We have developed a graphite resistive heated diamond anvil cell (GRHDAC) for powder and single-crystal x-ray diffraction experiments at the Extreme Conditions Beamline (P02.2) at PETRA III, Hamburg, Germany. The GRHDAC can heat samples homogeneously and precisely control the temperature up to 2000 K at high pressures, by placing it in a water-cooled vacuum chamber. The advantage of the GRHDAC is demonstrated through the study of geophysical processes in the Earth's crust and upper mantle region.

Internal resistive heating of non-metallic samples to 3000 K and >60 GPa in the diamond anvil cell

Benedict J. Heinen et al.

Summary: High pressure-temperature experiments offer insights into phase diagrams and physical properties of matter under extreme conditions, facilitating the synthesis of novel materials. Recreating planetary interior conditions through experiments provides crucial constraints on physical properties of phases, aiding in the development of planetary process models and interpretation of geophysical observations. The novel internal resistive heating technique for the diamond anvil cell enables stable heating of non-metallic samples at extreme conditions, offering precise control and stability in temperature variations, making it a valuable tool for material investigation.
