A multi-lab test of the facial feedback hypothesis by the Many Smiles Collaboration

Nicholas Alvaro Coles et al.

Summary: According to the facial feedback hypothesis, individuals' subjective experiences of emotion are influenced by their facial expressions. However, evidence for this hypothesis has been mixed. A global multicentre study involving 3,878 participants from 19 countries found that both facial mimicry and voluntary facial action could amplify and initiate feelings of happiness. However, evidence of facial feedback effects was less conclusive when facial feedback was manipulated unobtrusively via a pen-in-mouth task.

Summary: Blocking facial mimicry affects perceptual dominance in terms of cumulative time favoring neutral faces, but does not change the time before the first dominance is established.
