Acquisition and extinction across multiple virtual reality contexts

Victor Ananda Wong et al.

Summary: This experiment investigated the impact of conducting human contingency learning tasks across multiple virtual contexts on recovery. The results showed that recovery of excitatory responding can be attenuated by experimental extinction in both single and multiple contexts. This study demonstrated that learning across multiple contexts can negatively impact subsequent extinction.

A model for recovery-from-extinction effects in Pavlovian conditioning and exposure therapy

Masato Nihei et al.

Summary: Exposure therapy is an effective intervention for anxiety-related problems. However, traditional associative theories cannot fully explain the recovery-from-extinction effects. In this paper, a mathematical extension of Bouton's model is proposed to explain these effects and provide implications for exposure therapy.

Aerobic exercise and consolidation of fear extinction learning among women with posttraumatic stress disorder

Kevin M. Crombie et al.

Summary: This study examined whether aerobic exercise during the consolidation window after fear extinction learning can reduce the return of fear in women with PTSD. The results showed that moderate-intensity aerobic exercise significantly reduced threat expectancy ratings following reinstatement compared to the control group. However, there were no significant differences in skin conductance responses between the exercise group and the control group in terms of spontaneous recovery, renewal, or reinstatement.

The effects of presenting additional stimuli resembling the CS plus during extinction on extinction retention and generalisation to novel stimuli

Allison M. Waters et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that extinction training with conditional stimulus (CS+) and similar stimuli enhances extinction retention and generalisation. This study aimed to confirm the specificity of presenting stimuli similar to CS+ during extinction. Results showed that participants exhibited larger skin conductance responses during extinction to CSs in different extinction conditions. Multiple, Standard, and Other stimuli extinction groups showed more negative evaluations of CSs after extinction, extinction test, and generalisation test compared to the Standard extinction group. The findings suggest that presenting original CSs and similar stimuli during extinction can lead to elevated physiological responses and reduced responses to novel stimuli.

BEHAVIORAL AND NEUROBIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS OF PAVLOVIAN AND INSTRUMENTAL EXTINCTION LEARNING

Mark E. Bouton et al.

Summary: This article reviewed the behavioral neuroscience of extinction, highlighting that both Pavlovian and operant extinction rely on new inhibitory learning rather than erasure of original learning. Neural circuitry involved in Pavlovian extinction includes the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and hippocampus, while instrumental extinction involves distinct ensembles in corticostriatal, striatopallidal, and striatohypothalamic circuits. Despite significant progress in the field in recent decades, a fully integrated biobehavioral understanding is still pending.
