Methane Adsorption Characteristics Under In Situ Reservoir Conditions of the Wufeng-Longmaxi Shale in Southern Sichuan Basin, China: Implications for Gas Content Evaluation

Chao Qian et al.

Summary: The characteristics of methane adsorption on Wufeng-Longmaxi shale were studied under different pressures and actual in situ water saturation. It was found that methane-shale adsorption exhibited Gibbs excess adsorption at high pressure. The methane adsorption capacity was influenced by total organic carbon content, micropore volume, and total specific surface area. Pore volume and specific surface area were mainly contributed by abundant micropores associated with organic matter. As the temperature increased, the methane adsorption capacity decreased. Actual in situ water saturation was primarily correlated with clay content, and the adsorption capacity decreased with increasing water saturation due to the formation of an adsorbed water film and pore blockage by water clusters.

Experimental investigation into simultaneous adsorption of water vapor and methane onto shales

Longjie Ma et al.

Summary: This study reports a new experimental method for studying the simultaneous adsorption of water vapor and methane onto shale. The findings show that the amount of water vapor adsorbed greatly exceeds that of methane, and the equilibrium time for water vapor is longer than that for methane. When reaching a critical equilibrium degree, the level of methane adsorption declines in SAWM and PMDS experiments.

Dynamic model for the simultaneous adsorption of water vapor and methane on shales

Zhaodi Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a dynamic model was proposed to analyze simultaneous water vapor and methane adsorption in shale gas reservoirs. The model was validated using experimental data, and the results showed that the strength of adsorption to shale is stronger for water vapor than for methane. The diffusion coefficients of methane and water vapor initially increase and then decrease with time.

Influence of Pore Structure Particularity and Pore Water on the Occurrence of Deep Shale Gas: Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation, Luzhou Block, Sichuan Basin

Xueyuan Li et al.

Summary: The pore structure and pore water in deep shale gas reservoirs are unique and have a significant impact on gas occurrence. The development of pores by organic matter controls the connectivity of deep shale. Different burial depths and beds result in significant differences in pore structure, and mineral anti-compaction protection pores and reservoir fluid over-pressure are crucial for the development of organic pores. Primary formation water plays a vital role in the occurrence and enrichment of shale gas.

Calculation of gas concentration-dependent diffusion coefficient in coal particles: Influencing mechanism of gas pressure and desorption time on diffusion behavior

Minghao Yi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of equilibrium pressure and desorption time on gas diffusion in coal particles. The results showed that both the decrease of gas equilibrium pressure and the extension of desorption time led to a decrease in the diffusion coefficient. Additionally, the adsorbed gas had a significant effect on gas diffusion, and the diffusion coefficient in the free gas system was overestimated.

Relationship Between Micropore Structure of Different Coal Ranks and Methane Diffusion

Yidong Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of pore structure on the diffusion coefficient of methane from coal of different ranks. The results show that the specific surface area, pore volume, and fractal dimension associated with micropores have an impact on the adsorption and diffusion capacity of methane in coal. The diffusion coefficient and amount of methane diffused vary with coal rank and pore structure. The research findings contribute to a better understanding of gas migration in coal and have great significance for the safe mining of coalbed methane.

Full coupling of CO2-CH4 transport and sorption with solid deformation in gas shale enhances natural gas recovery and geological CO2 storage capacity

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: A thermodynamically rigorous constitutive model is used to describe the full coupling among the nonlinear processes of transport, sorption, and solid deformation in organic shale. The simulation results indicate that gas adsorption is the main storage mechanism in shale, accounting for up to 70% of the stored CO2 mass. Neglecting the coupling between sorption and solid phase deformation would result in underestimation of carbon dioxide storage capacity and natural gas recovery factor.

Summary: CO2-enhanced coalbed methane technology is not only used for gas extraction, but also for geological storage of CO2 to reduce atmospheric CO2 concentration. The role of supercritical carbon dioxide for recovery of shale gas and sequestration in gas shale reservoirs

Qiao Lyu et al.

Summary: The development of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling techniques has expanded the exploitation of shale gas resources, but potential environmental issues with water usage have prompted research on supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) as an alternative stimulation fluid. SC-CO2 has shown promise in enhancing shale gas recovery and potentially sequestering CO2 in shale reservoirs, thus reducing carbon emissions. Understanding shale-CO2 interactions and the long-term effects of SC-CO2 injection is crucial for the efficiency and environmental impact of this technology.
