High-throughput sequencing confirms the boundary between traditionally considered species pairs in a group of lichenized fungi (Peltigeraceae, Pseudocyphellaria)

Todd J. Widhelm et al.

Summary: Accurate species delimitations are crucial for understanding genetic diversity and conducting research in evolutionary and conservation biology. In lichenized fungi, there has been a debate on whether species pairs with similar morphology and chemistry should be classified as one species or two. Recent analysis using RADseq data has found fixed genetic differences between the two morphs, contradicting earlier conclusions based on limited Sanger sequencing data.

A new perspective on the macrolichen genus Platismatia (Parmeliaceae, Ascomycota) based on molecular and phenotypic data

Olivia A. Asher et al.

Summary: Platismatia lichens are common and widespread, but there have been limited molecular phylogenetic studies on them. This study presents an expanded phylogeny of Platismatia based on newly generated ITS sequences. The results confirm the distinction between P. wheeleri and the widespread P. glauca. The study also suggests that Platismatia could be a useful model for future research on reproductive mode, biogeography, and speciation in lichens.

Stand openness predicts hair lichen (Bryoria) abundance in the lower canopy, with implications for the conservation of Canada's critically imperiled Deep-Snow Mountain Caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou)

Trevor Goward et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between stand spacing and Bryoria abundance in tree-dwelling hair lichens. The results showed that Bryoria abundance strongly increases with increasing stand openness, with Pinus contorta supporting heavier Bryoria loadings than other local host trees. The Angle-To-Canopy-Skyline (ATCS) protocol was found to be a powerful predictor of arboreal hair lichen abundance, although it did not predict the abundance of foliose lichens. The study suggests that canopy openness is a key factor in the development of heavy Bryoria loadings within the range of Deep-Snow Mountain Caribou.

Interpreting phylogenetic conflict: Hybridization in the most speciose genus of lichen-forming fungi

Rachel Keuler et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential role of hybridization in the diversification of the Xanthoparmelia genus of lichen-forming fungi. Using genome sequencing, the researchers found incongruence among individual gene trees but consistent results from species tree approaches. Multiple potential hybridization events were detected in the Holarctic clade, suggesting one source of trait variability in this diverse genus.

Factors affecting the efficiency of molecular species delimitation in a species-rich insect family

Giulia Magoga et al.

Summary: This study tested the efficiency of various single-marker species delimitation methods on leaf beetles and found that factors such as number of haplotypes, geographic distance, difficulty in species identification, and taxonomic rank can affect efficiency. Distance-based methods outperformed phylogenetic tree methods, and a higher number of haplotypes per species had a negative effect on delimitation efficiency. The presence of species that are difficult to identify also significantly decreased the efficiency of delimitation methods.

Species boundaries in the messy middle-A genome-scale validation of species delimitation in a recently diverged lineage of coastal fog desert lichen fungi

Jesse Jorna et al.

Summary: Species delimitation among closely related species remains challenging due to discrepancies between traditional phenotype-based approaches and natural groupings. High-throughput sequencing has made it more cost-effective to acquire genome-scale data, allowing for the resolution of ambiguous species boundaries. Despite the development of various species delimitation analyses, such as BPP and SNAPP+BFD, empirical molecular approaches may still be biased by confounding factors, leading to inconsistent results. Cross-validating results between different datasets and controlling for genetic divergence at the population level can improve the reliability of species delimitation.

Integrative approaches for species delimitation in Ascomycota

Sajeewa S. N. Maharachchikumbura et al.

Summary: Disturbances caused by human activities result in biodiversity loss and call for more effective ways to discover and delimit species. The paper reviews the main approaches used to delimit species in the phylum Ascomycota, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each species concept. The advancement in phylogenetic methods has increased the rate of species discovery, but challenges such as gene tree heterogeneity still hinder species delimitation in low-rank phylogenies.

Species in lichen-forming fungi: balancing between conceptual and practical considerations, and between phenotype and phylogenomics

Robert Luecking et al.

Summary: Lichens are symbiotic associations between fungi, algae/cyanobacteria, and specific bacteria. The naming conventions differentiate between the scientific, Latinized name referring to the primary mycobiont and the vernacular name for the whole lichen. Taxonomic recognition in lichen-forming fungi follows similar principles as other fungi, requiring empirical evidence for species delimitation.
