Impact of starch-based bioplastic on growth and biochemical parameters of basil plants

Silvia Celletti et al.

Summary: The use of bioplastics in agriculture is considered an ecological choice to limit the environmental impact of plastics. However, the impact of bioplastic residues on the environment is unclear. This study investigated the effect of a starch-based bioplastic on basil growth and biochemical parameters. The results showed that the addition of bioplastic negatively affected basil growth and biochemical parameters, causing stressful conditions.

Development and characterization of natural sourced bioplastic for food packaging applications

Mohammad Asaduzzaman Chowdhury et al.

Summary: Climate change and pollution caused by traditional petrochemical plastics have led to increased popularity in research on biodegradable and environmentally friendly plastics (bioplastics). Bioplastics can be made from renewable natural ingredients and used as food packaging materials without harming the environment. This study focuses on developing bioplastic films using natural ingredients such as tamarind seed starch, berry seed starch, and licorice root. The materials were characterized through biodegradability, mechanical testing, FTIR, SEM, TGA, DSC, and antimicrobial analysis. The presence of phenolic compounds in berry seed starch improved the soil biodegradability, mechanical and thermal properties of the bioplastic films. The FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of various biomolecules. Improved antimicrobial performance was also observed. The results confirm the suitability of the prepared bioplastic samples for packaging applications.

Bioplastics for a circular economy

Jan-Georg Rosenboom et al.

Summary: Bioplastics have the potential to contribute to a more sustainable and circular economy by reducing carbon footprint and offering advantageous material properties. However, they also face challenges such as negative agricultural impacts, competition with food production, unclear end-of-life management, and higher costs. Emerging chemical and biological methods can enable the upcycling of plastic waste into higher-quality materials. Standardization and guidelines are needed to guide purchasing choices, and clear regulations and financial incentives are essential for the large-scale adoption of bioplastics in a truly sustainable manner.
