Influence of heating on structure and mechanical characteristics of amorphous Al86Ni9Gd5 ribbons

S. V. Vasiliev et al.

Summary: The changes in structure and mechanical characteristics of amorphous Al86Ni9Gd5 melt-spun ribbons under linear heating were studied. The results showed non-monotonic changes in mechanical characteristics due to structural variations during a three-stage transformation process. Nanocrystallization resulted in a decrease in all measured properties, while formation of intermetallic compounds and coarsening of structure led to partial recovery. Microhardness reached a maximum in samples with partially crystallized structure. The potential for practical applications of plasticity recovery and high microhardness was discussed.

Nucleation kinetics model for primary crystallization in Al-Y-Fe metallic glass

Tianrui Duan et al.

Summary: The high density of aluminum nanocrystals in Al-based metallic glasses indicates a high nucleation rate. The structural analysis by fluctuation electron microscopy revealed the presence of Al-like medium range order regions as spatial heterogeneity, which decreases the nucleation barrier of aluminum nanocrystals.

Separate primary crystallization of three crystalline phases in a nearly eutectic Cu58Y37Sc5 metallic glass on heating and deformation

D. V. Louzguine-Luzgin et al.

Summary: The crystallization behavior of a Cu58Y37Sc5 metallic glassy alloy was investigated using various methods. Differential scanning and isothermal calorimetries were performed to study the phase transformations. X-ray diffractometry studies showed the simultaneous formation of Cu2Y, CuY, and CuSc crystalline phases, indicating eutectic crystallization, while the isothermal crystallization kinetics corresponded to primary crystallization. Transmission electron microscopy observations revealed a complex crystallization process involving heterogeneous nucleation on pre-existing particles.

Structural peculiarities of Pd-Cu-Ni-P and Pt-Cu-Ni-P metallic glasses as a reason for their significantly different room-temperature plasticity

D. V. Louzguine-Luzgin et al.

Summary: The structural features of Pd42.5Cu30Ni7.5P20 and Pt42.5Cu27Ni9.5P21 metallic glasses were examined using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Pd42.5Cu30Ni7.5P20 exhibited true bulk glass-forming behavior without crystalline particles/nuclei, while Pt42.5Cu27Ni9.5P21 was a crystal growth-controlled bulk glass-former containing nanoparticles with a different chemical composition and an average size of about 1 nm. These structural differences influenced the mechanical properties at room temperature. Thermodynamic calculations supported the observed features.

Kinetics of structure formation in the vicinity of the glass transition

Jurgen E. K. Schawe et al.

Summary: The structural stability of a gold-based bulk metallic glass was investigated using FDSC. A chemically homogeneous glass was produced and the structural variations during annealing were observed. The kinetics of these processes and the stability of the crystalline structures were discussed.

Thermally induced microstructure evolution and effects on the corrosion behaviors of AlFeSi metallic glass coatings

Yunyun Ge et al.

Summary: The effects of devitrification on microstructure evolution and corrosion resistance of arc-sprayed AlFeSi metallic glass coatings were investigated. The results showed that different annealing temperatures led to the formation of new phases and influenced the crystalline size of the coatings. Electrochemical tests revealed that devitrification increased the current density and decreased the impedance of the coatings. The as-sprayed coating exhibited the best corrosion resistance, while decreased amorphous fraction and crystal structure heterogeneity in the annealed coatings contributed to the degradation of corrosion resistance.

Long-range-diffusion-assisted but interface-controlled crystallization of a Mg-Ni-Mm glass below its glass-transition temperature

Yu P. Ivanov et al.

Summary: The heating of a metallic glass with nominal composition Mg(75)Ni(20)Mm(5) revealed primary crystallization to Mg2Ni. The study of this crystallization process showed complexity in crystal shape, linear growth, and internal disorder within the crystal.

Compositional dependence of the fragility in metallic glass forming liquids

Sebastian A. Kube et al.

Summary: The authors propose a new method to measure the fragility of metallic glass forming liquids and find significant variations in fragility across Mg-Cu-Y alloys. Contrary to conventional understanding, low fragility does not necessarily correlate with high glass-forming ability. The introduction of crystallization complexity provides an additional contribution to modeling glass forming ability.

Effects of oxygen on local atomic order and diffusion properties in Al-Ni glass-forming liquids

Jiacheng Zhang et al.

Summary: Through reactive molecular dynamics simulations, we found that oxidation in Al-Ni and its oxygen-containing liquids leads to the formation of extremely stable oxide clusters, affecting the surrounding free volumes and diffusion coefficients. The diffusion coefficients follow the Arrhenius relation at high temperatures, but a dynamical crossover occurs above the glass transition temperature.
