Chromium biogeochemical cycling in basalt-derived paddy soils from the Leizhou Peninsula, South China

Zhaoxia Xia et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanisms controlling Cr transformation during anoxic-oxic alternation in basalt-derived paddy soils. It reveals that available Cr fractions increase under anoxic phase but decrease under oxic phase, indicating the reversibility of Cr availability. The study also establishes kinetic models to quantitatively describe Cr transformation during anoxic-oxic alternation in these soils.

Transport and fate of Cu and Cd in contaminated paddy soil under acid mine drainage

Yan Pan et al.

Summary: Long-term accumulation of heavy metals in paddy soils caused by acid mine drainage (AMD) irrigation poses a severe threat to environmental health. This study investigates the retention and mobility mechanisms of Cu and Cd in soil after AMD flooding, and finds that Cd is more mobile than Cu and the soil has a greater adsorption capacity for Cu.

Chromium transformation driven by iron redox cycling in basalt-derived paddy soil with high geological background values

Ke Zhang et al.

Summary: The flooding and drainage of paddy fields have significant effects on the transformation of heavy metals. In basalt-derived paddy soil with high geological background values, the transformation of Cr is primarily driven by redox-sensitive iron cycling.

Transformation kinetics of exogenous nickel in a paddy soil during anoxic-oxic alteration: Roles of organic matter and iron oxides

Kaiyi Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transformation processes of nickel in paddy soils under anoxic and oxic conditions. The results show that under anoxic conditions, complexation with soil organic matter dominates nickel immobilization, while under oxic conditions, organic matter and Fe-Mn oxides contribute similarly to nickel release.

A small extent of seawater intrusion significantly enhanced Cd uptake by rice in coastal paddy fields

Wenting Chi et al.

Summary: Paddy fields located around estuaries face the issue of seawater intrusion, and the impact of salinity levels on Cd accumulation in rice grains is still unclear. Pot experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of different salinity levels on Cd availability and uptake by rice plants. The results showed that higher salinity levels increased Cd availability and uptake in rice roots and grains, mainly due to competition for binding sites by cations and the formation of Cd complexation with anions. The study highlights the importance of considering food safety in rice cultivation near estuaries.

Transformation kinetics of exogenous lead in an acidic soil during anoxic-oxic alteration: Important roles of phosphorus and organic matter

Hansha Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transformation of lead (Pb) in acidic soil under alternating anoxic-oxic conditions using a kinetic model. The results suggest that under anoxic conditions, Pb is gradually transferred to fulvic complex, Fe-Mn oxides bound, and sulfides bound Pb, while under oxic conditions, the fulvic complex Pb further increases. Phosphorus plays a more important role than organic matter in Pb immobilization under anoxic conditions, while the phosphates, Fe-Mn oxides, and sulfides immobilized Pb is slowly released and then complexed by fulvic acids during the re-immobilization of dissolved organic matter in soil under oxic conditions.

Antimony redox processes in the environment: A critical review of associated oxidants and reductants

Yidan Zhang et al.

Summary: The environmental behavior of antimony (Sb) has attracted attention recently due to its increasing use in various industries worldwide. The mobility and toxicity of Sb depend largely on its speciation, which is influenced by its oxidation state. While previous studies on arsenic (As) have provided insights into the environmental behavior of Sb due to their similar chemical properties, recent research has shown fundamental differences in the speciation, particularly in the context of redox reactions. Therefore, understanding the biogeochemical processes affecting Sb redox transformations is crucial for managing Sb in natural and engineered environments.

Iron reduction process and antimony behavior change in paddy soils under stationary flooding conditions

Jiumei Long et al.

Summary: This study investigates the iron reduction process in paddy soils and its impact on antimony (Sb) behavior. The results show that iron reduction lasted for 12-14 days under simulated flooding conditions, releasing a significant amount of Sb and affecting its distribution in the environment.

Significant Contribution of Solid Organic Matter for Hydroxyl Radical Production during Oxygenation

Chenglong Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the production of hydroxyl radicals (.OH) from solid humic acid during oxidation. The results demonstrated that solid humic acid transferred electrons to oxygen, leading to the generation of .OH. The modeling results also confirmed that reduced solid organic matter played a significant role in .OH production.

Seawater intrusion induced cadmium activation via altering its distribution and transformation in paddy soil

Wenting Chi et al.

Summary: Seawater intrusion can pose environmental risks to paddy soils around estuaries, with the impacts on the availability of heavy metals still being unclear. This study found that increasing salinity levels led to higher release of Cd from soils, indicating that Cd competition by cations and complexation by anions dominated the release rather than pH. Additionally, the availability of Cd in paddy soil was found to be enhanced with increasing salinity levels, especially during drainage, indicating the importance of high salinity in influencing Cd availability in paddy soil.

Antimony release and volatilization from rice paddy soils: Field and microcosm study

Jaime N. Caplette et al.

Summary: The fate of antimony in submerged soils and the impact of agricultural practices on its release and volatilization were investigated. The study found that the concentrations of antimony in porewater were associated with factors like iron, manganese, and sulfate. The concentrations of antimony in surface water were much higher than regulatory values, posing a potential risk to aquaculture and rice agriculture. Additionally, it was observed that manuring enhanced the volatilization of antimony.

Biochar and soil properties limit the phytoavailability of lead and cadmium by Brassica chinensis L. in contaminated soils

Assa Albert Houssou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of biochars derived from cinnamomum woodchip, garden waste, and mulberry woodchip on the phytoavailability of lead and cadmium in soil, as well as their uptake by Chinese cabbage. The results showed that the amendment of soil with biochar significantly reduced the mobility of Cd and Pb in soil and plant uptake. However, the effects varied depending on the type of biochar and soil properties.

Summary: This study investigated the transformation of Cd speciation in paddy soil under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, revealing important mechanisms such as increased adsorption on organic matter and reductive dissolution of Fe oxides. The kinetic models established for soil biogeochemical processes provided a feasible approach to predict Cd phytoavailability during the drainage phase of acid paddy field, with a stronger correlation to Cd content in rice grain than chemical extraction methods.
