Agroforestry improves food security and reduces income variability in semi-arid tropics of central India

Priyanka Singh et al.

Summary: Using cross-sectional data from 170 farmers, this study empirically demonstrates that agroforestry has a positive impact on food security and reduces income variability among farmers in the semi-arid tropics of central India. Increasing tree density and tree diversity on farm by 1% significantly increases food security by 0.231% and 0.141% points, respectively. Additionally, income variability decreases by around 0.38% and 0.16% with unit percentage increase in tree density and diversity. Therefore, agroforestry practice can be an essential climate-smart agriculture option in the era of global climate change.

Climate change and water-related threats in the Indian Sundarbans: food security and management implications

Pritha Datta et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of climate change-induced water-related threats on food security in the Indian Sundarbans through desk research and the Delphi method. The findings indicate that climate change has negatively impacted agricultural output, traditional livelihoods, access to food, and food utilization by affecting freshwater availability and creating health hazards. Furthermore, the study suggests that intensified weather extremes will further jeopardize food security. It concludes that a combination of local-level adaptation measures and global-level mitigation initiatives is essential for ensuring food security in the region.

Socioeconomic Determinants and Perceptions of Smallholder Farmers towards Agroforestry Adoption in Northern Irrigated Plain, Pakistan

Shahzad Ahmad et al.

Summary: In the era of global overpopulation, the agroforestry system can play a crucial role in ensuring agricultural sustainability, livelihood opportunities, ecological benefits, and household food security. However, understanding the factors driving the adoption of sustained agroforestry practices is challenging due to farmers' personal characteristics and perceived statuses. This research aims to examine the determinants and psychological drivers of smallholder farmers' intention to adopt agroforestry practices.

Role of Homestead Forests in Adaptation to Climate Change: A Study on Households' Perceptions and Relevant Factors in Bandarban Hill District, Bangladesh

Tarit Kumar Baul et al.

Summary: Homestead forests play an important role in climate change adaptation and mitigation. The study found that homestead forest owners perceive an increasing erratic pattern of temperature and rainfall, and these perceptions vary significantly with hill altitudes and associated ecosystems. Additionally, the majority of households believe that homestead forests can enhance their capacity to adapt to climate change by providing diverse products, services, and environmental benefits.

How much do we know about trade-offs in ecosystem services? A systematic review of empirical research observations

Kishor Aryal et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviews the trade-offs in ecosystem services over the past 16 years, revealing issues such as geographical bias, limited involvement of government institutions, and a focus on biophysical constraints rather than utility function divergence among stakeholders. It also identifies conflicting ecosystem services pairs, major drivers, and stakeholders of trade-offs, and proposes research trajectories to guide the future direction of sustainability science.

Assessing the consistency of trends in Indian summer monsoon rainfall

Pritha Datta et al.

Summary: This study investigates the nature, stability, and changes in trends of Indian summer monsoon rainfall (ISMR) using graphical and statistical approaches. The results show significant monotonic trends in the long-term data, but with different levels of trend stability. Further analysis reveals the instabilities in the ISMR trends. The study discusses potential mechanisms and spatio-temporal changes, as well as methodological challenges, which can aid in formulating climate action plans.

Hedge and Alder-Based Agroforestry Systems: Potential Interventions to Carbon Sequestration and Better Crop Productivity in Indian Sub-Himalayas

Brajendra Parmar et al.

Summary: Agroforestry systems (AFSs) have the potential to combat climate change and ensure food security by sequestering carbon and improving soil organic matter. This study evaluated different AFSs in the eastern sub-Himalayas, India, and found that hedge- and alder-based AFSs had higher crop productivity and soil organic carbon (SOC) compared to guava-based AFSs and the control group. The results suggest that hedge- and alder-based AFSs play a significant role in carbon retention and can be promoted for climate-smart agriculture practices in the region.

Enhancing Farm Income through Boundary Plantation of Poplar (Populus deltoides): An Economic Analysis

S. B. Chavan et al.

Summary: Poplar boundary plantations have become popular among farmers due to their smaller yield reductions and ability to rotate crops. A study found that poplar trees had a negative impact on sorghum and wheat yields within 9 meters of the tree line, but the microclimatic effect between 9 and 15 meters increased crop yields. Economic analysis showed that an east-west boundary plantation of poplar trees was the most profitable.

Factors Influencing the Feasibility, Effectiveness, and Sustainability of Farmers' Adaptation Strategies to Climate Change in The Indian Eastern Himalayan Foothills

Pritha Datta et al.

Summary: This study examines the efficiency of local farmers' adaptation measures in response to climate change in the Indian agricultural sector. The results show that farmers are aware of climate change and are implementing various adaptation measures. Agroforestry, shifting to low water-intensive commercials, irrigation, and intensification of winter crops are the preferred measures. However, there is a misalignment between the perceived efficiency of the measures and their scale of adoption.

'Can homegardens assist in enhancing the domestic food security?' A study in Jaffna Peninsula, Sri lanka

W. A. M. Lowe et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential contribution of homegardens in ensuring domestic food requirements. It was found that households with highly diverse livestock and poultry, and access to more animal proteins, are more secure in terms of caloric availability. Animal proteins and pulses play a crucial role in securing domestic calorie availability, while crops in homegardens were found to be less important in terms of Food Consumption Score (FCS). Cultivating animals and crops for valuable components in homegardens can enhance food security in the future.
