Diet Quality and Measures of Sarcopenia in Developing Economies: A Systematic Review

Summary: Sarcopenia, characterized by loss of muscle mass, strength, and physical performance, is commonly associated with aging and can lead to physical disability and higher mortality in older adults. Diet quality has been identified as a potentially modifiable risk factor for sarcopenia. However, the association between diet quality and sarcopenia in developing economies appears to be conflicting. A systematic review of literature from developing economies found inconsistent results, but overall, a positive association was observed between diet quality and components of sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia: prevalence, associated factors, and the risk of mortality and disability in Japanese older adults

Summary: This study found that Japanese older adults meeting Asian criteria for sarcopenia had increased risks of all-cause mortality and disability. Sarcopenia-related factors other than ageing included hypoalbuminaemia, cognitive impairment, low activity, and depressed mood. Individuals with sarcopenia had higher risks of mortality and incident disability, with different factors influencing men and women.

Effect of Sarcopenia Status on Disability Incidence Among Japanese Older Adults

Summary: The updated definition of sarcopenia by EWGSOP2 includes low muscle mass and quality, as well as poor physical performance as indicative of severe sarcopenia. The study found that individuals with any form of sarcopenia were at a higher risk of disability, with severe sarcopenia increasing the risk further. Grip strength and walking speed were negatively correlated with disability incidence.
