Harvest Maturity and Preharvest Aminoethoxyvinylglycine Treatment Effects on Cold-induced Ethylene Production of ?Gala? Apples

Wanlinghe Cai et al.

Summary: Cold storage is commonly used to maintain quality and extend shelf life, but it can enhance ethylene production depending on the cultivar. This study investigated the index of absorbance difference (IAD) values of 'Gala' apples, which reflect the chlorophyll concentrations in the skin affected by cold-induced ripening patterns. The results differed from previous literature, showing that exposure to 0.5 degrees Celsius for 21 days resulted in higher ethylene production rates and internal ethylene concentration (IEC) compared to fruit kept at 20 degrees Celsius. Preharvest treatment with the plant growth regulator aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) suppressed ethylene production, especially in 2020.

Factors affecting development of disorders expressed after storage of 'Gala' apple fruit

Luiz Carlos Argenta et al.

Summary: This study investigated the factors influencing the susceptibility and development of physiological disorders and decay in 'Gala' apple fruit during long-term storage. It was found that factors such as fruit maturity stage, 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment, and storage temperature have an impact on the physiological disorders and softening of the fruit. The results of this study are important for implementing practical strategies to reduce the occurrence of these postharvest disorders.

Timing of Ethylene Inhibition Affects Internal Browning and Quality of 'Gala' Apples in Long-Term Low Oxygen Storage

Jennifer R. DeEll et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of preharvest and postharvest 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatments on internal browning and quality of 'Gala' apples during long-term low O-2 storage. The results showed that storing apples in 0.5-0.6 kPa O-2 significantly reduced internal browning, while the effect of 1-MCP in this storage condition was minimal. Preharvest 1-MCP treatment improved firmness retention and reduced internal browning. The effects of ethylene inhibition and greasiness were consistent, but there was little and inconsistent effect on soluble solids concentration and malic acid content.

Preharvest 1-methylcyclopropene treatment enhances 'stress-associated watercore' dissipation in 'Jonagold' apples

Burak E. Algul et al.

Summary: Preharvest application of 1-MCP reduced internal ethylene concentrations and starch pattern indices in apples, leading to a faster decrease in stress watercore incidence and severity in treated fruit compared to untreated fruit.

Summary: This study demonstrates that pre- and postharvest inhibition of ethylene perception by 1-MCP can have significant effects on storage disorders that are influenced by fruit maturity and storage temperatures.
