Multi-stakeholder perspective to generate evidence and strategies for sustainable management of ropes from the fishing sector of Norway

Technical, Economic, and Environmental Comparison of Closed- Loop Recycling Technologies for Common Plastics

Summary: Over 400 million metric tons of plastic waste are generated globally each year, resulting in pollution and lost resources. Recycling strategies can recapture this wasted material, but there is a lack of quantitative and transparent data on the capabilities and impacts of these processes. The study develops a dataset for closed-loop polymer recycling technologies, including mechanical recycling and solvent-based dissolution of various types of plastic, to compare their economic and environmental performances, as well as material qualities. Mechanical recycling and PET glycolysis showed the best performance in terms of economic and environmental aspects, while dissolution and enzymatic hydrolysis provided the highest material qualities. The study also identified key process contributors and highlighted future research areas.

Material flow analysis of commercial fishing gears in Taiwan

Summary: This study conducted a static material flow analysis to estimate the flows and stocks of fishing gear in Taiwan in 2020. The inflow, outflow, and stock of fishing gears were found to be 8,846 t/a, 4,271 t/a, and 4,575 t/a, respectively. Only 36% of end-of-life fishing gear is recycled, and the rest is either incinerated or landfilled. The need to increase recycling capacity, prevent gear loss in the ocean, and promote gear repairs to extend their lifespan is emphasized.

The study suggests the need for increased involvement of science, technology, and innovation actors in the policymaking process to avoid unintended outcomes of endless growth in CE policies.
