Climate Evolution Through the Onset and Intensification of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation

E. L. McClymont et al.

Summary: The Pliocene Epoch was a period of climate change characterized by smaller Northern Hemisphere ice sheets and long-term ice-sheet expansion. The intensification of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation caused asynchronous shifts in climate variability across regions and between climate proxies.

Summary: The Monte San Nicola area in southern Sicily provides a significant reference for the definition of the Gelasian Stage GSSP, and its importance has been reaffirmed. A comprehensive revision of the Gelasian Stage in its type area is needed to fully understand the evolution of bio- and magnetostratigraphic events.

Climate evolution in the Adriatic Sea across the last deglaciation: A multiproxy approach combining biomarkers and calcareous plankton

Pietro Bazzicalupo et al.

Summary: A multiproxy study using calcareous plankton assemblages, terrestrial and marine biomarkers was conducted on a sediment core from the South Adriatic Sea. The study aimed to investigate climate variability in the Eastern Mediterranean during the last deglaciation, specifically between 20 and 11 ka BP. The results show changes in moisture availability and ice melting delivery during the Heinrich Stadial 1 period. Additionally, the study finds a correlation between temperature variations in the South Adriatic Sea and the Greenland ice core oxygen isotope record, indicating the climatic response of the South Adriatic Sea to global climate variations.

Early Pleistocene calcareous nannofossil assemblages from the Gulf of Cadiz reveal glacial-interglacial and millennial-scale variability

Samanta Trotta et al.

Summary: This study investigates the variations of Coccolithophore in the Gulf of Cadiz during the Early Pleistocene period. It finds that temperature and nutrient availability are the main factors influencing Coccolithophore, and the glacial-interglacial cycles have a significant impact on the composition and abundance of Coccolithophore. The study also suggests a connection between the climate dynamics in the Gulf of Cadiz and the dynamics of the ice sheets in the northern hemisphere.

Organic carbon burial in Mediterranean sapropels intensified during Green Sahara Periods since 3.2 Myr ago

Katharine M. Grant et al.

Summary: Dark organic-rich layers have accumulated in Mediterranean sediments since the Miocene. Through studying high-resolution geochemical and environmental magnetic records, it is found that organic burial intensified 3.2 million years ago, possibly due to a sudden nonlinear change in the environment of North Africa. This finding is of great significance for understanding environmental evolution.

Living coccolithophore communities in the central Mediterranean Sea (Summer 2016): Relations between ecology and oceanography

S. Bonomo et al.

Summary: The study of coccolithophores in the Central Mediterranean during summer 2016 revealed the dominance of Emiliania huxleyi in surface to intermediate layers and Florisphaera profunda in the deep photic zone. The distribution of coccolithophore taxa was found to be influenced by environmental parameters, with K-strategist taxa related to warm surface waters and lower photic zone taxa influenced by the development of a Deep Chlorophyll Maximum and high salinity values.

Summary: This study on Pliocene-Pleistocene sequences in the Nile Delta analyzed samples from a well in the offshore north-western part, revealing the presence of cool water and eutrophic conditions, indicative of stressed environmental conditions. The study showed a gradual decline in species diversity and an increase in species dominance over time.

Paleoproductivity Modes in Central Mediterranean During MIS 20-MIS 18: Calcareous Plankton and Alkenone Variability

Patrizia Maiorano et al.

Summary: Paleoproductivity patterns in the Mediterranean region are reconstructed using coccolithophore and alkenone data from the Early/Middle Pleistocene Montalbano Jonico section in southern Italy. The study reveals low productivity during glacial and stadial phases, and enhanced productivity during interglacial and interstadials, influenced by factors like water turbidity, temperature, precipitation, and river discharge. The findings suggest that regional productivity dynamics were impacted by similar forcing mechanisms over different time periods.
