A PDF discretization scheme in wavenumber-frequency joint spectrum for simulating multivariate random fluctuating wind fields

Yang Li et al.

Summary: The paper proposes a probability density function discretization scheme in the wavenumber domain to alleviate computational burden. The wavenumber-frequency joint spectrum is treated as a probability density function, and the wavenumber domain is unevenly discretized according to it. The proposed scheme is compared with uniform and conventional uneven discretization schemes in terms of accuracy and efficiency.

Numerical analysis of the hydrodynamic interaction between a propeller and trapezoidal rudder

Weipeng Zhang et al.

Summary: The wake evolution of the propeller-rudder system affects the noise performance of the vessel. The interaction between the propeller and trapezoidal rudder is investigated, including the analysis of asymmetric pressure distribution on the rudder and the evolution of rudder tip vortex and propeller vortices in the downstream. The results suggest that the trapezoidal rudder induces completely asymmetric distributions of turbulence in the propeller wake, and the rudder geometry can be optimized to adjust the turbulence in the wake.

Study on the thrust fluctuation and vortices of a pump-jet propulsor under different duct

Han Li et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of duct parameters on the thrust fluctuation and flow features of a pre-swirl stator pump-jet propulsor (PJP) via embedded large eddy simulation (ELES). The numerical approach is verified with experiments, showing good precision. Results show that the duct parameters significantly affect the performance and thrust fluctuation, which should be helpful in the duct design and reduce thrust fluctuation, and will eventually benefit low-noise pump-jet design.

Convection velocity in turbulent boundary layers under adverse pressure gradient

Artur Drozdz et al.

Summary: The convection velocity (UC) of turbulent structures in adverse-pressure-gradient (APG) turbulent boundary layers (TBLs), ranging from Reynolds numbers Re-iota approximate to 1400 - 4000, was studied. The study used the decomposed streamwise skewness factor and two-point correlation method to estimate and verify the convection velocity. It was found that in the overlapping region of APG flows, the convection velocity profiles resemble the universal logarithmic law characteristic of zero-pressure-gradient flows. Furthermore, a proposed physical mechanism explains the impact of increased convection velocity on the mean flow in APG TBLs.

Stress equation based scaling framework for adverse pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers

S. K. Romero et al.

Summary: This paper presents a framework for estimating appropriate turbulent velocity scales in adverse pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers (APG TBLs) through a study of the mean stress balance. The velocity scales of APG TBLs are examined by analyzing the relationship between the Reynolds shear stress and pressure stress. A new velocity scale, u(hyb), is proposed that combines the wall-shear-stress velocity with a pressure-stress-based velocity, and varies with distance from the wall. Experimental and computational data sets are used to validate the proposed velocity scale, which shows superior similarity in turbulent stress profiles compared to wall-distance-independent velocity scales.

Turbulent transient boundary layer over a flat plate

Mehrnoush Kharghani et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing momentum flow rates affect boundary layer thickness, change vortex shapes, and lead to more stretching. Turbulence phase delay is almost the same in both streamwise directions, but varies in the wall-normal direction and is related to the physical shape of eddies. The outer region of the boundary layer is more severely affected compared to the near-wall region.

Effects of the duct on the vibro-acoustic characteristics of the pump-jet-shaft-submarine system under pump-jet excitation

Zhiwei Su et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of distributed pressure on the duct induced by rotor and its effects on the vibro-acoustic response of the coupled pump-jet - shaft - submarine system. The pulsating pressure on the duct and rotor is computed using computational fluid dynamics, and then mapped to the structural mesh to calculate the vibro-acoustic responses of the system. The study finds that the distributed pressure on the duct near the rotor disk is tonal at blade passing frequency and contributes significantly to the underwater sound radiation.

Experimental and numerical investigations on the flow-induced vibration and acoustic radiation of a pump-jet propulsor model in a water tunnel

Shuaikang Shi et al.

Summary: Experimental and numerical methods were used to investigate the flow-induced vibration and acoustic radiation characteristics of a pump-jet in water. The vibration response of the rotor was measured using a customized instrument, and simulation methods based on CFD, FEM, and BEM were established. Results showed prominent peaks in the vibration response at SF and BPF, indicating high amplitudes caused by inadequate cancellations of unsteady rotor forces. Sound Pressure Level after superposition was maximal at BPF, consistent with experimental results. The established simulation method demonstrated a similar trend to experimental results in studying flow-induced vibration and acoustic radiation of the pump-jet.

Unsteady responses and correlation characteristics of propeller blades under turbulence excitation

Haoyu Yao et al.

Summary: This paper quantitatively investigates the unsteady responses and blade-to-blade correlation characteristics of a propeller, focusing on the turbulence ingestion force. The results reveal the contributions of different blade strips to the resultant unsteady loading and identify the sources of different broadband loadings. The findings of this study provide novel ideas for understanding the mechanism of turbulence ingestion force and can be used in the engineering design of noise-reduced propellers.

Investigation of large scale motions in zero and adverse pressure gradient turbulent boundary layers using high-spatial-resolution particle image

Muhammad Shehzad et al.

Summary: High-spatial-resolution two-component, two-dimensional particle-image-velocimetry measurements were taken in a high Reynolds number Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel to study zero-pressure-gradient and adverse-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layers. The large-scale motions were found to be energized in the outer-layer, with adverse-pressure-gradient making them stronger.

Coherence of wall pressure fluctuations in zero and adverse pressure gradients

Nan Hu

Summary: The study investigates the effects of adverse pressure gradients induced by different angles of attack of a NACA airfoil on wall pressure fluctuations on a flat plate model. The analysis includes calculations and quantification of streamwise and spanwise coherence and coherence lengths, proposes a coherence length model based on Reynolds number effects, and achieves considerable improvement in prediction accuracy compared to other models. Additionally, evaluations are made on the prediction accuracy of off-axis coherence of fluctuating wall pressure field using the Corcos model and the Smol'yakov and Tkachenko model.
