Removal of boron by a modified resin in fixed bed column: Breakthrough curve analysis using dynamic adsorption models and artificial neural network model

Shuqin Bai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the continuous removal of toxic element boron from aqueous solution using a new phenolic hydroxyl modified resin (T-resin). The results showed that the breakthrough time, exhaustion time, and uptake capacity of the column bed increased with increasing column bed height and decreased with increasing influent flow rate. The artificial neural network (ANN) model was found to be more accurate in predicting the breakthrough behavior of the column compared to the conventional models. The adsorption capacity of boron changed during five time regeneration.

Biosorption of Tetracycline and Cephalexin onto Surfactant-Modified Waste Biomass Using Response Surface Methodology and Ecotoxicological Assessment: Phytotoxicity and Biotoxicity Studies

Ulker Asli Guler et al.

Summary: In this study, waste hazelnut shell was effectively modified to remove tetracycline and cephalexin from water and reduce their residual antimicrobial activity. Response surface methodology was employed to determine the optimal conditions for removal efficiency. The RSM design predicted removal efficiencies of 37.34% and 83.07% for tetracycline and cephalexin, respectively. Various isotherm models were applied to the equilibrium data, and acute tests were conducted to evaluate the toxicity after biosorption. The biosorbent exhibited significant biosorption capacity and reduced toxicity for tetracycline and cephalexin.

Modified Hazelnut Shells as a Novel Adsorbent for the Removal of Nitrate from Wastewater

Marija Stjepanovic et al.

Summary: This study aims to prepare a novel adsorbent by modifying hazelnut shells and evaluate its effectiveness in removing nitrates from model solutions and real wastewater. The results show that the modified hazelnut shell (MHS) has a high nitrate removal efficiency, and it can be used over a wide range of pH values. The adsorption process can be explained by both the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models, and the kinetics can be described by a pseudo-second order model. The nitrate adsorption process is mainly controlled by chemisorption.

Valorization of Hazelnut Shells as Growing Substrate for Edible and Medicinal Mushrooms

Federico Puliga et al.

Summary: The cultivation of hazel is expanding, and the processing of hazelnuts produces a large amount of waste. It was found that hazelnut shells, due to their high lignin content, are a suitable substrate for cultivating edible and medicinal mushrooms. The study showed that Ganoderma lucidum, Lentinula edodes, and Pleurotus cornucopiae can grow and decay the lignocellulosic fraction of hazelnut shells.
