The protective effects of melatonin in high glucose environment by alleviating autophagy and apoptosis on primary cortical neurons

Lijiao Xiong et al.

Summary: Cognitive dysfunction is a common complication of diabetes, and melatonin has been shown to have a neuroprotective effect on neurological diseases. This study investigated the protective effect of melatonin on cortical neurons in a high glucose environment and found that it may work by activating the Akt/mTOR/ULK1 pathway and downregulating autophagy.

Melatonin attenuated chronic visceral pain by reducing Nav1.8 expression and nociceptive neuronal sensitization

Meng-Dan Lv et al.

Summary: This study found that melatonin may be involved in the regulation of sodium channel sensitization in rat colonic dorsal root ganglion neurons through the MT2 receptor. The results suggest that the MT2 receptor could be a potential therapeutic target for sodium channel sensitization in these neurons.

Nocturnal melatonin increases glucose uptake via insulin-independent action in the goldfish brain

Kazuki Watanabe et al.

Summary: The neurohormone melatonin regulates the circadian rhythm and glucose homeostasis. In a study on goldfish, melatonin injection increased glucose uptake in the brain and liver, while melatonin receptor antagonist reduced glucose uptake in liver cells. This suggests that melatonin is a circadian regulator of glucose balance independent of insulin effect.

Melatonin: A Potential Regulator of DNA Methylation

Kinga Linowiecka et al.

Summary: The indoleamine hormone melatonin, derived from the pineal gland, regulates various cellular processes including the circadian rhythm, proliferation, apoptosis, oxidative damage, immune regulation, pigmentation, and mitochondrial metabolism. Melatonin has been shown to have effects on DNA methylation, which is involved in cancer initiation and non-malignant diseases development. This review discusses the potential role of melatonin as an epigenetic regulator by modulating DNA methylation through changes in the expression of DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) and ten-eleven translocation (TET) proteins. The authors suggest that melatonin could be used in combination with epigenetic drugs as a new anticancer strategy.

Melatonin ameliorates paclitaxel-induced mice spermatogenesis and fertility defects

ZhiXin Wang et al.

Summary: Paclitaxel can negatively affect germ cell proliferation and meiosis, leading to impaired sperm quality and male fertility. Melatonin has a protective effect on the side effects of paclitaxel, improving sperm production and quality. This study provides valuable information for further understanding the molecular mechanisms of paclitaxel on male reproduction and the protective mechanisms of melatonin.

Melatonin and Selenium Suppress Docetaxel-Induced TRPV1 Activation, Neuropathic Pain and Oxidative Neurotoxicity in Mice

Kemal Ertilav et al.

Summary: Docetaxel has positive therapeutic actions in treating glioblastoma, breast tumors, and prostate cancers, but can induce neuropathic pain and neurotoxicity. TRPV1 cation channel activation mediates DT-induced pain, and melatonin and selenium protect against oxidative neurotoxicity and pain. Antioxidant properties of MT and Se play a key role in mediating these protective effects.

Neuronal Hippo signaling: From development to diseases

Manas Ranjan Sahu et al.

Summary: The Hippo signaling pathway plays crucial roles in various stages of neuronal development, including proliferation, migration, differentiation, and apoptosis. Overactivation of the pathway may lead to neurodegenerative diseases, but it could also be targeted for therapeutic purposes. Recent studies have highlighted the regenerative potential of this pathway in neuronal repair.

Diabetic neuropathic pain induced by streptozotocin alters the expression profile of non-coding RNAs in the spinal cord of mice as determined by sequencing analysis

Jian He et al.

Summary: Diabetic neuropathic pain (DNP) is a serious complication of diabetes characterized by spontaneous and stimulus-evoked pain. Non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) play important roles in cellular processes, and dysregulated expression may contribute to the development of DNP. This study analyzed the expression patterns of coding genes, microRNAs, long ncRNAs, and circular RNAs in the spinal cord of mice with STZ-induced DNP, revealing dysregulated expression and potential pathways involved in DNP pathogenesis.
