Numerical investigation of fire in the cavity of naturally ventilated double skin facade with venetian blinds

Youxian Huang et al.

Summary: Double skin facades provide benefits in terms of views, aesthetics, and energy savings. However, the glass facade poses risks to human life and firefighting efforts in the event of a fire. Shading devices, although helpful in reducing cooling load, can present challenges in firefighting and evacuation. The position and angle of Venetian blinds influence the spread of fire, but their combustibility and flammability were not considered.

Similarity assessment of using helium to predict smoke movement through buildings with double skin fa?ades during building integrated photovoltaics fires

Monireh Aram et al.

Summary: Compared to building attached photovoltaics (BAPVs), building integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs) have a greater impact on the building envelope. This poses a greater challenge for ensuring fire safety, as changes in the building envelope and interactions between photovoltaic panels and the building can complicate the situation. The fire hazards associated with photovoltaic panels, such as smoke generation, have a significant impact on the fire safety of the building and its occupants. This study proposes the use of helium smoke as an alternative to real fire tests for simulating a fire in an integrated solar facade. Experimental and simulation results demonstrate similarities between helium smoke and small scale real fires, validating the use of helium smoke as a substitute for real fire tests.

Design optimization of a solar system integrated double-skin fagade for a clustered housing unit

G. Barone et al.

Summary: This study compares the impact of cavity depth on the performance of a conventional double facade (DF), building-integrated photovoltaic double facade (BIPV DF), and building-integrated photovoltaic thermal double facade (BIPVT DF). The aim is to enhance the functionality of the interstitial space between the building envelope and programmed space in terms of spatial expansion and energy production. Three systems were analyzed using simulation software, and a parametric analysis was conducted by varying the cavity depth. The results showed that the conventional DF system had lower heating demands but higher cooling needs compared to the other systems, and increasing the cavity depth led to increased heating loads and decreased cooling loads.

Summary: Climate change has a severe impact on the built indoor environment, emphasizing the importance of retrofitting buildings. This research compares a ventilated double skin facade with an unretrofitted solution to assess their impact on thermal comfort under Mediterranean winter and summer conditions. The study finds that the double skin facade performs better in summer but may lead to indoor overheating at night. In winter, it has less comfort hours compared to the unretrofitted solution but shows better thermal performance under minimum peak temperatures.
