Predicting thermal runaway in styrene polymerization reactions: Divergence criterion with phase space reconstruction

Andong Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal hazard of the styrene polymerization process through reaction calorimetry experiments and gas chromatography experiments. The thermal runaway criterion for the polymerization reaction is deduced by combining the experimental results. The phase space of the system is reconstructed using the delayed coordinate method to obtain the reconstructed divergence criterion (re-div). Experimental results show that the exothermic heat and adiabatic temperature rise of the polymerization reaction increase logarithmically with the initial reaction temperature. The analytical divergence criterion (div) obtained through the analytical method is more accurate and effective compared to the numerically calculated div. After experimental verification, it is confirmed that the re-div can predict and accurately determine whether the reaction is out of control in advance.

In-silico vinyl chloride suspension polymerization: Kinetic modelling, thermal runaway prediction, and prevention

Jian-Peng Han et al.

Summary: A combined kinetic and heat transfer model is developed to study the kinetics and predict thermal runaway of vinyl chloride (VC) suspension polymerization. The model maps reactor temperature, monomer conversion, mole of initiator, radical concentrations, and average molecular properties during non-isothermal processes. Simulation results show that a lower jacket temperature and a larger heat transfer coefficient can delay or avoid the risk of thermal runaway. Model-based design is done to prevent thermal runaway by maintaining a 50°C isothermal process through fine-tuning the jacket temperature or heat transfer coefficient.

Influence of thermal runaway in styrene-acrylonitrile bulk copolymerization revealed by computational fluid dynamics modeling

Ya-Nan Yang et al.

Summary: The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and kinetic-based moment methods are used to simulate the bulk copolymerization of styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) in a stirred tank reactor. The study investigates the effects of reaction conditions on the copolymerization process and product properties, finding that adjusting speed, initiator loadings, monomer ratio, and initial temperature can delay thermal runaway. Temperature heterogeneity is crucial in SAN copolymerization and differences exist between ideal and non-ideal models in predicting product properties.

Deterministic modeling of non-adiabatic solution radical polymerization of n-butyl acrylate in light of runaway prevention

Ya-Nan Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the non-isothermality of acrylate polymerization process using a deterministic moment-based modeling approach combined with the divergence criterion. The operating parameters of the polymerization reactor were optimized through simulation, which provided a safe operating window and demonstrated the suitability of a pseudo-isothermal process for tuning the molecular properties of the resulting polymers. This research proposes a deterministic simulation method for both process safety and molecular properties control.

What do we know already about reactor runaway? - A review

Alex Kummer et al.

Summary: The article discusses the possible causes, consequences, and prevention measures of reactor runaway, including the appropriate design of the reactor, operation strategy, and early warning detection system. Assessment methods for thermal risk analysis and criteria for reactor runaway are detailed, along with the design of operation strategy for semi-batch reactors. Significant works on reactor design, operation, and safety are collected and evaluated, with suggestions for further research areas to improve thermal safety knowledge.

Thermal runaway incidents-a serious cause of concern: An analysis of runaway incidents in China

Haoran Zhang et al.

Summary: China's chemical industry has developed rapidly in the past decades, but thermal runaway incidents have posed a serious threat. Statistical analysis of 271 thermal runaway incidents in China from 1984 to 2019 showed an overall increase in both the number and fatalities of incidents. Organic and inorganic industries accounted for 57.2% and 10.7% of the total incidents, respectively.
