Phase field model coupling with strain gradient plasticity for fracture in lithium-ion battery electrodes

Ruixiao Xue et al.

Summary: In this study, the fracture of electrode particles in lithium-ion batteries was investigated using the phase field method and strain gradient plasticity model. The results showed that the crack becomes blunting, making it difficult to propagate, which leads to a decrease in the rate of lithiation. Meanwhile, the contribution of strain gradient helps to avoid fracture and failure.

Mechanical performance and cushioning energy absorption characteristics of rigid polyurethane foam at low and high strain rates

Youcai Xiao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical response of rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) under different strain rates and densities. The results indicate that the static compressive behavior of RPUF is significantly influenced by density and strain rate, while the dynamic compressive behavior is mainly determined by density. The effect of strain rate is not significant at higher strain rates. The elastic modulus, compressive strength, and yield stress of RPUF increase with density. The experimental results show that the compressive strength is enhanced under high strain rate loading compared to quasi-static loading. The variation in energy absorption and efficiency with respect to RPUF density is studied, and the typical damage mechanisms of RPUF with different densities are investigated using scanning electron microscopy.

Shasha Qiu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a combination technique to address the computational cost and high crack resolution requirements in three-dimensional phase-field modeling of cracks. The technique utilizes a simple and robust one-pass staggered solution scheme to implement a hybrid phase-field model, and incorporates adaptive mesh refinement using the predictor-corrector algorithm to minimize the number of nodes. The results show a significant reduction in computational cost and efficient modeling of complex crack events.

Variational crack phase-field model for ductile fracture with elastic and plastic damage variables

Jike Han et al.

Summary: In this study, a new fracture phase-field model with elastic and plastic damage variables is proposed based on characteristic features of existing crack PF models for ductile fracture. The model accurately represents damage evolution in elastoplastic materials by accommodating separate damage variables for elasticity and plasticity, as well as controlling the amount of damage driving force through thresholds and coefficients. Numerical examples demonstrate the model’s ability to mimic typical fracture behavior of elastoplastic materials.

A mode-adjustable phase-field model for brittle fracture by regulating distortional crack driving energy

Liulei Hao et al.

Summary: A mode-adjustable phase-field model is proposed to regulate the relative contribution of crack driving energy and change the cracking mode. The model shows better simulations than the classical phase-field model in fracture experiments for polymethylmethacrylate and Al 7075-T651 aluminum. Simulating a shear test, it is found that the weight parameter affects the failure pattern during crack propagation, while the initial crack deflection angle remains unchanged in a specific spectral decomposition split method.

Summary: The prediction of crack initiation and propagation in ductile failure processes is challenging, requiring accurate estimation of material parameters for a precise determination of material response. A Bayesian inversion framework is developed to provide accurate knowledge regarding effective mechanical parameters, relying on the phase-field approach to fracture. The framework is algorithmically described in detail and substantiated with numerical examples, using common Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques for estimating material parameters.
