An extended theory of planned behavior to explain the intention to use carsharing: a multi-group analysis of different sociodemographic characteristics

Leiming Li et al.

Summary: Carsharing is a sustainable transportation method that has been thriving in China. People's intention to use carsharing is directly influenced by attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control, and is indirectly impacted by their environmental concern. Car ownership and gender have a moderating effect on people's intention to use carsharing.

Is ride-hailing competing or complementing public transport? A perspective from affordability

Si Qiao et al.

Summary: Previous studies have focused on estimating the substitution effect of ride-hailing on public transport for policy formulation. This study integrates small data (questionnaire) and big data (ride-hailing orders) to estimate the potential for public transport use in ride-hailing trips. The findings reveal that ride-hailing competes with and complements public transit, serving different purposes and target populations.

Ride-pooling adoption, efficiency and level of service under alternative demand, behavioural and pricing settings

Arjan de Ruijter et al.

Summary: By considering the trade-off that users make when choosing a shared ride, this study formulates a compensatory function to evaluate the net benefit for users from ride pooling. The study also proposes a method for matching travel requests and vehicles, and investigates the potential of ride-pooling services based on demand characteristics, user preferences, and pricing policies. The results suggest that achieving the total vehicle mileage savings found in previous studies requires users to be highly willing to share their rides and offered a significant discount.

Summary: A copula-based random parameters nominal-ordinal joint model construct is proposed to address the significant methodological gaps in the application of copula formulation for ordinal random variables. The study incorporates a generalized ordered formulation within copula and explores the dependence structure as a function of different covariates. The empirical contributions focus on examining the active traveler crash type and injury severity outcomes using crash data from Queensland, Australia.

On-demand ride-hailing platforms with heterogeneous quality-sensitive customers: Dedicated system or pooling system?

Yuanguang Zhong et al.

Summary: We examine how an on-demand ride-hailing platform makes choices between a dedicated system and a pooling system for heterogeneous customers and drivers. The dedicated system has two independent queues for quality-sensitive and quality-insensitive customers matched with low- or high-quality drivers respectively, while the pooling system randomly matches both types of customers with all drivers without distinguishing service quality. We analyze the platform's optimal pricing and wage decisions in both systems, and find that the pooling system can achieve a win-win-win outcome when the driver's opportunity cost is not high and the difference in opportunity cost between two types of drivers is relatively small.

Exploring the influences of ride-hailing services on VMT and transit usage-Evidence from California

Guang Tian et al.

Summary: This study explores the effects of ride-hailing services on household vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and transit usage. By analyzing data from California, the study finds associations between ride-hailing usage frequency and household VMT generation and transit usage. However, these associations lose statistical significance when controlling for the built environment. This suggests that the impact of ride-hailing services on transportation choices may vary at the household level and depend on multiple factors.

Characterizing the adoption and frequency of use of a pooled rides service

Mohamed Abouelela et al.

Summary: Pooled-ride services have the potential to reduce traffic externalities and improve transportation systems in urban areas. This study examined the factors impacting the adoption of pooled-ride services and the frequency of service use. The results showed that users' sociodemographic characteristics and travel attitudes are the main factors influencing the shift from different modes to pooled rides. Service-related factors such as multi-tasking, trip fare, and parking problems also impact the decision to use the service. The frequency of service use is mainly affected by trip characteristics.

Behavioral factors impacting adoption and frequency of use of carsharing: A tale of two European cities

Alvaro Aguilera-Garcia et al.

Summary: Innovative mobility services, including free-floating carsharing, have gained popularity in urban areas, particularly in Europe. This study explores the factors influencing carsharing usage in two European cities, Madrid and Munich, and highlights the role of sociodemographic characteristics, mobility-related attributes, and psychological attitudes. The research finds that males, young individuals, those with higher income and education, and residents of inner and denser districts are more likely to use free-floating carsharing. Interestingly, individuals with a higher propensity for sharing, a variety-seeking lifestyle, and a preference for driving show greater familiarity with carsharing services, while pro-environmental behaviors reduce carsharing usage.

Substitution and complementarity patterns between traditional transport means and car sharing: a person and trip level analysis

Riccardo Ceccato et al.

Summary: The study found that the current car sharing system is perceived as efficient and useful; car sharing members are young males, living in high-income and low-size household with, in particular, a high number of workers and low number of available cars; moreover, the presence of private parking near home has a strong negative impact. Car sharing can substitute car driving trips, while evidence of the same happening with biking and walking trips is not supported by models but only marginally seen from descriptive statistics. There is also complementarity between car sharing and public transport, as well as a strong complementarity between car sharing and bike sharing, so policymakers should promote these modes jointly.
