Determinants of the Cost-Effectiveness of Telemedicine: Systematic Screening and Quantitative Analysis of the Literature

Rosalind Bell-Aldeghi et al.

Summary: This study reviewed economic evaluations of telemedicine published from 2008 to 2018 and analyzed the characteristics of these evaluations and the determinants of economically efficient telemedicine interventions. The majority of the studies found that telemedicine interventions are efficient, regardless of the medical domain. Articles with higher standards of economic evaluation were less likely to report an efficient intervention.

Value of screening for the risk of sudden cardiac death in young competitive athletes

Patrizio Sarto et al.

Summary: This study aimed to report the long-term findings of the Italian programme of cardiovascular preparticipation screening (PPS) in young, competitive athletes. The study assessed the diagnostic yield for diseases at risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD), the costs of serial evaluations, and the long-term outcomes of PPS in a large population of Italian children. Over an 11-year study period, 69 children (0.3%) were identified with cardiovascular diseases at risk of SCD, and one child with normal PPS findings experienced an episode of resuscitated cardiac arrest during sports activity.

Virtual Cardiology: Past, Present, Future Directions, and Considerations

Gauranga Mahalwar et al.

Summary: The review examines the role of telemedicine and virtual visits in cardiology practice before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, their limitations, and future prospects. It is found that telemedicine has helped alleviate the burden on healthcare systems and improve patient outcomes during the crisis. Both patients and physicians prefer virtual visits when possible, and these visits have the potential to continue after the pandemic. While tele-cardiology has its limitations, it has shown potential to become an integral part of medical practice in the future.

Cardiology in a Digital Age: Opportunities and Challenges for e-Health: A Literature Review

Veronica Pegoraro et al.

Summary: Mortality rates associated with heart diseases are increasing, making them the leading cause of death globally. Digital technologies can provide support for prevention, monitoring, and care delivery. This study reviews international experiences and proposes a framework for optimizing resources and technologies, promoting new organizational models and intervention strategies. The potential significance of e-health and telemedicine for cardiac illnesses is highlighted, although privacy concerns and technology-acceptance-related issues need to be addressed.

The use and effects of telemedicine on complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine practices: a scoping review

Aimun Qadeer Shah et al.

Summary: This scoping review synthesized evidence on the use of telemedicine in the context of complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine (CAIM). The findings suggest that telemedicine delivery of CAIM is feasible, acceptable, and results in positive health outcomes. However, barriers such as chronic illness, inability to form strong patient-provider relationships, and technological difficulties need to be addressed.

Telemedicine in pediatric cardiology: pros and cons

Tamar J. Preminger

Summary: The purpose of this review article is to summarize recent developments in telemedicine in pediatric cardiology, including its benefits, challenges, and future directions. The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the use of telemedicine, which has had a positive impact on healthcare providers, patients, and caregivers. Recent data have shown that telemedicine can expedite necessary care and reduce healthcare utilization, such as unnecessary emergency department visits, transports, and hospitalizations. Telecardiology allows for establishing a medical home, improving access, and continuity of care. It also has the potential to provide more consistent preventive care, leading to improved health equity, reduced morbidity and mortality, and associated costs. However, there are challenges to optimal implementation of telecardiology, including additional workload and administrative burden, licensing restrictions, disparities in access to care, insurance reimbursement, and potential fraud and abuse. Overcoming these barriers is critical for the progress of telecardiology.

Telemedicine in Cardiology: Modern Technologies to Improve Cardiovascular Patients' Outcomes-A Narrative Review

Kamil Kedzierski et al.

Summary: The registration of physical signals is important in cardiological diagnostics. Remote monitoring technologies have great potential, especially during the COVID-19 outbreak. Remote monitoring of arrythmia and heart failure has been well studied, while monitoring for ischemia requires further research. Remote monitoring provides significant economic and organizational gains for healthcare systems.
