Investigation of the flow boiling performance in mini channel with micro pin fin

Yubing Wang et al.

Summary: Flow boiling performance of pin fin arrays with different structural parameters was experimentally investigated in a 300 mm long mini channel. Results showed that nucleate boiling and convective boiling together govern the two-phase flow boiling heat transfer in the pin fin array. The increase in channel width delays the transition to convective boiling dominated flow. The best performance was obtained in pin fin array with a channel width of 1.4 mm, due to a drastic increase in two-phase pressure drop compared to heat transfer. A new correlation considering the pin fin array structure parameters was proposed and showed significant accuracy improvement in predicting the flow boiling local heat transfer coefficient of R134a in a mini channel with pin fin arrays.

Experimental study on condensation heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of R32 flowing inside an alternating cross-section flattened tube

Amawasee Rukruang et al.

Summary: This work presents an experimental study on the two-phase flow inside an alternating cross-section flattened (ACF) tube. The ACF tube showed a higher condensation heat transfer coefficient and a reasonable pressure loss penalty compared to a circular tube. The heat transfer coefficient and frictional pressure drop of the ACF tube were higher than that of the circular tube by approximately 25.6-111.1% and 4.3-39.9%, respectively. New correlations for the Nusselt number and two-phase friction factor were proposed.

Flow characteristics of gas-liquid adiabatic and boiling annular two-phase flows

Peng Ju et al.

Summary: A comprehensive understanding of annular flow characteristics is essential for improving the efficiency and safety of petroleum and natural gas pipelines, as well as heat transfer equipment. Liquid film characteristics and wave characteristics play crucial roles in heat and mass transfer in annular flows. This paper reviews previous studies and prediction models for these parameters and examines their predictive capability using existing databases. The effects of channel geometry, pressure, and heating state on these characteristics are considered, and the importance of heating state in wave velocity prediction is highlighted.

Flow condensation heat transfer and pressure drop of R134a alternative refrigerants R513A and R450A in 0.95-mm diameter minichannels

Jordan A. Morrow et al.

Summary: Due to the Kigali amendment to the Montreal Protocol, refrigerants with high global warming potential (GWP) such as R134a are being phased down or phased out, and low GWP refrigerants like R513A and R450A are being considered as replacements. Understanding the flow condensation heat transfer performance of these low GWP refrigerants, especially in the condenser, is crucial. Experimental data on flow condensation heat transfer coefficients for R134a, R513A, and R450A were collected in seven mini-channels with a diameter of 0.95 mm. The data showed that the heat transfer coefficients increased with increasing mass flux and quality for all three refrigerants. Comparisons were made with three condensation correlations, which predicted the data with mean average errors ranging from 15.9% to 23.4%.
