Regulatory and academic studies to derive reference values for human health: The case of bisphenol S

Claire Beausoleil et al.

Summary: The study compared the similarities between BPS and BPA, revealing potential adverse effects of BPS on human health at lower doses. Inconsistencies in toxicity were found between academic and regulatory studies for BPS, suggesting the need to establish human reference values for exposure to BPS based on academic findings.

Bisphenol A and declining semen quality: A systematic review to support the derivation of a reference dose for mixture risk assessments

Andreas Kortenkamp et al.

Summary: Through a systematic review of animal and epidemiological studies, we found convincing evidence of declines in semen quality after gestational bisphenol A (BPA) exposures. Many negative findings can be attributed to deficiencies in study sensitivity and insufficient control of background contamination. Divergent findings in epidemiological studies can be explained by differences in exposure conditions. We chose a BPA reference dose that balances caution and the weight of evidence to estimate BPA exposures that are unlikely to affect semen quality. Current BPA exposures experienced by European populations and beyond exceed this reference dose, and some epidemiological studies have observed effects on semen quality as a result of adult BPA exposures.

Combined exposures to bisphenols, polychlorinated dioxins, paracetamol, and phthalates as drivers of deteriorating semen quality

Andreas Kortenkamp et al.

Summary: This study conducted a mixture risk assessment based on European exposures to investigate the chemicals contributing to the decline in semen quality in Western countries. The results showed that bisphenols, polychlorinated dioxins, phthalates, and analgesics were major drivers of these risks. Efforts to lower exposures to these substances are necessary to mitigate the risks.
