One Health, One Welfare, One Right: Introducing Animal Rights in Europe

Summary: The increasing interlinkage between humans and animals has led to the emergence of the `One Health' and `One Welfare' discourse, which has been further fueled by the covid-19 pandemic. While attention has been given to the concept of One Health in regulatory policy, legal protection for animals has been largely ignored. This article explores the possibility of establishing legal animal rights within the framework of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (echr) through a human rights or a biocentric approach.
